DIVIDED UNITY - Pastor J. C. O’Hair

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

“WITH ALL LOWLINESS, AND MEEKNESS, WITH LONGSUFFERING, FORBEARING ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE … “ENDEAVORING TO KEEP THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT IN THE BOND OF PEACE … ONE BODY .. . ONE SPIRIT . . . ONE HOPE OF YOUR CALLING… ONE LORD … ONE FAITH … ONE BAPTISM … ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL.” Ephesians 4:2 to 7.

“BEHOLD, HOW GOOD AND HOW PLEASANT IT IS FOR BRETHREN TO DWELL TOGETHER IN UNITY.” Psalm 133:1
“To us there is one God the Father … and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, • and we by Him.” I Corinthians 8:6. Here we have stated the first great important doctrine of Christian unity. The Lord Jesus Christ said, “I and my Father are one.” There is one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” “We are sanctified through the offersing of the body of Jesus Christ once-for-all.” Hebrews 10:10. That once-for-all offering, the Lord Jesus Christ called His “baptism”. Luke 12:50. On the cross of Calvary the Lord Jesus Christ was baptized into dealh. “So many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death.” Romans 6:3. Christ was buried. Christ was raised. Christ is seated in the highest heavenlies, Head over all things unto the Church, which is His Body. Ephesians 1:9 to 22.

Members of Chrises Body are buried with Him by baptism into death. Romans 6:4. They are raised to seek those things which are . above where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1 to 4. Members of Christ’s Body are alive with Christ and seated with Christ in the highest heavenlies. They were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. Ephesians 1:4. They were called, not according to works, but according to that grace and purpose of God which was given us in Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world. 2 Timothy 1:9. They are waiting for Christ to be manifested, to be manifested with Him in glory. Colossians 3:3 and 4. Christ is in these members, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:27. God desires that these members should know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints. Ephesians 1:18. This is the one calling that is God’s basis of Christian unity. This calling was God’s purpose in the eternal ages before He called Abraham and chose His servant Israel. Israel’s calling is different from the calling of members of the Body of Christ. A mixture of these callings will hinder, in fact, make impossible, obedience to Ephesians 4:3; “endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit.”

There is one Body. There are several churches in the Bible, but God has one and only one Church for today. That Church is the Body of Christ. This Body is clearly described in Ephesians and Colossians Christ had a little flock while He was on earth. Luke 12:32 and 33. That was a kingdom flock different from the Body of Christ as to hope and calling. They were “not preaching the Glorious Gospel of the Blessed God, which was committed to Paul’s trust. I Timothy 1:11. They knew nothing whatever of the Body of Ephesians and Colossians. They were instructed by their Messiah as to Israel’s kingdom hopes and given the gospel of the kingdom.

All sinners saved by grace, without religion, without works, without a cause, are members of Christ’s Body. They are identified with Him in His “Death Baptism”, which is the one baptism declared by God to be the basis for keeping the unity of the Spirit. It is utterly impossible to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace by mixing Israel’s water baptism with the believer’s death baptism, as it is to mix Israel’s hope and calling with the hope and calling of the Body of Christ. Water baptism is practiced by most of the 350 sects of the Christian Church with many different meanings and in many different ways. This is in total disregard, if not wilfull disobedience, to God’s plain instructions in Ephesians 4:3 to 5. If God desires that we keep the unity of the Spirit on the basis of one baptism, which is a Divine baptism, not made with hands, it is worse than folly to make any attempt to obey God’s instructions with thirty varieties of water baptism.

Can you point to a single Christian practicing water baptism who obeys Ephesians 3:9? “Make all men see what is the fellowship (administration) of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God?” If we are to make men see the mystery (the truth of the Body and the Head) with the hope-and calling of this dispensation, we must not expect to show it to them in the Scriptures concerning Israel, where there is no reference to this glorious truth, about which all of the prophets of Israel, and the Lord’s twelve apostles were ignorant as well as silent; but in the writings of the man who was entrusted with this special revelation.

We shall not succeed in getting very many members of the Body of Christ to keep the unity of the Spirit, but let us endeavour in God’s own way and receive God’s commendation. ,….. .•

CHRIST’S COMMISSION FROM ABOVE THE MOUNTAINS - Pastor J. C. O’Hair

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

We find the word “mountain” nearly six hundred times in the Bible. The Hebrew word is “bar” or “harar,” sometimes translated “hill.” Many times we read of “the holy mountain,” or “the mountain of God,” “My holy mountain.” Peter declared, concerning his experience on the mount of transfiguration, that the three apostles beheld the power and the coming of Christ, “when we were with Him in the holy mount.” (2 Peter 1:18). In Hebrews 8:5 we read that Moses was instructed by Jehovah regarding Israel’s “worldly” tabernacle and sanctuary, (Hebrews 9:1), “see that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount.” (Hebrews 8:5).

Hear these wonderful and significant words in Psalm 87:1 to 3:’
“His foundation is in the holy mountains. The Lord loveth the gates
of Zion more than all of the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are
spoken of thee, 0 City of God.”

Therefore, we read in Psalm 3:4: “I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and He heard me out of His holy hill.” And again in Psalm 15:1: “Lord, who shall abide in Thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in Thy holy hill (mountain)?” And again in Psalm 2:6: “Yet have I set My King upon My holy hill of Zion.” Where is that King now, as the Head of the Church? (Ephesians 1:20 to 23).

It is interesting to compare the question of Psalm 24:3 with the truth of members of the Body of Christ, in this present “grace” economy, recorded in Ephesians 2:5 and 6: “Who shall ascend into the hill (mountain) of the Lord? or who shall stand in His holy place?” . . . “hath made us alive together with Christ; and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together IN THE HEAVENLIES in Christ Jesus.” The HEAVENLIES and the Mountain of God are not identical; and surely God’s HOLY HILL ZION is not where Christ now is, “far above all heavens.” (Ephesians 4:8 to 11).

Members of Christ’s Body know that their citizenship is in heaven; that they are blessed with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies (Philip-pians 3:20 and Ephesians 1:3); that they are not waiting for the Son of man to come back to earth to sit as a Judge and a King on the throne of His glory (Matthew 25:31 to 34): but they are looking for the glorious appearing of Christ, to ascend in resurrection bodies, to appear with Christ in glory. (Titus 2:13; Colossians 3:3 and 4).

But these Body-members believe 2 Peter 1:19; that we also have a more sure Word of Prophecy whereunto we do dwell that we take heed as a light that shineth in a dark place until the day dawn and the day star arise in our hearts. (2 Peter 1:19). Therefore they believe that all of the Scriptures are given by inspiration of God and not one jot or tittle will pass away until all be fulfilled. Therefore they believe the truth of Micah 4:7: “THE LORD SHALL REIGN OVER THEM IN MOUNT ZION, FROM HENCE. FORTH, EVEN FOREVER.” Yes, glorious things are spoken of that Holy Mountain, which at present is a disgrace to both God and Israel. For there God’s House shall be again established and people shall flow to it and many nations shall say, let us go up to the MOUNTAIN OF THE LORD . . . The Law shall go forth of Zion, and the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem. (Micah 4:1 to 3). It will be Israel’s Messiah and King on Mount Zion, not the Body of Christ now seated in the heavenlies, that will bring the MILLENNIUM to this troubled, sinful, confused world. The King of Glory shall enter in. Yes, glorious things are spoken in Zechariah 14:1 to 9. ‘The Lord shall be King over all the earth.’ (14:9). When? In that day. What day? When Christ’s feet shall stand right where they stood when He bade farewell to his apostles and they heard the Lord’s Messenger say, ‘this same Jesus, Which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner, as ye have seen Him go into heaven.’ (Acts 1:11). That was the Mount of Olives. After Christ had given His apostles the so-called great commission FROM A MOUNTAIN (Matthew 28:19 and 20) He bade farewell to them from a MOUNTAIN. A great scene is mentioned by John in Revelation 14:1: ‘I looked, and lo, a LAMB stood on MOUNT ZION.’ And who will be the 144,000 with Him? Not members of the Body of Christ.

Members of the Body of Christ will be far above the mountains with the Head of the Church in glory when the poor distressed Christ-rejecting sinners, rich and poor, religious and otherwise, will be praying for the mountains to fall upon them, so that they might be hidden from the wrath of the Lamb. The mercy of the King is like the dew upon the grass, but His wrath is like the roaring of the lion. (Proverbs 19:12 and 20:2). Our Lord Jesus Christ is not only the Lamb of God, Who suffered for sins, the Just for the unjust, to bear away our sins and to bring us to God (John 1:29 and I Peter 3:18); but He is the LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH, Who will unloose the seals that will pour out the awful, terrible, unbearable, wrath of God upon this earth (Revelation 5:5). Christ died to deliver sinners from the wrath to come. (1 Thessalonians 15 and 10). Those who do not receive Christ as Saviour, in grace, must meet Him, in wrath, as a Judge. (Acts 17:31… John 5:22.. . 2 Thessalonians 1:7 to 11).

In Revelation 6:14 and 16:20 we read: “and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.” . . . “and every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.”

SOME LESSONS FROM THE BIBLE MOUNTAINS

In this message later on we are to compare, and contrast, Christ’s COMMISSION FROM THE MOUNTAIN, in Matthew 28:19 and 20, with Christ’s COMMISSION FROM ABOVE THE MOUNTAIN.

In Psalm 72:3 we read that the mountains shall bring peace to the people. In Psalm 87:1 we read that God’s foundation is in the holy mountains. We have referred to Zechariah 145. We read there of the time that the Lord is to be King over all the earth after His feet stand upon the Mountain (Olives) (Zechariah 14:4). Then God’s kingdom nation will be planted in their own land and will never be plucked up again. (Amos 9:11 to 15).

Abraham was with Isaac in the mountain of the Lord when God, by oath, gave the land of Canaan to Israel. Genesis 22:14. God said to Abraham, ‘get thee into the land of Moriah,’ and there Abraham was
instructed to offer in sacrifice the son that he loved, ‘upon one of the MOUNTAINS which I will tell thee of.’ (Genesis 22:1 and 2). ‘Thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies,’ (Genesis 22:17). Israel was to enter Canaan some 400 years after God made His covenant with Abram concerning the land. (Genesis 15:13 and 14; 13:15; 17:8). When the time was fulfilled (the 400 years) and the Lord was ready to deliver Israel from Egypt and start them on the way to Canaan He met Moses, the deliverer, and Aaron, in ‘THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD.’ (Exodus 3:1 and 4:27). Then in Exodus and Leviticus and Deuteronomy we read many times that God and Moses met on the MOUNTAIN (Sinai). When Aaron was 123 years old he died in MOUNT HOR. Numbers 23:38 and 39. Then Moses was commanded to go up on Mount Ncbo (Pisgah) and die, ‘as thy brother died in Mount Hor.’ (Deuteronomy 32:50). Jacob, who became Israel, offered sacrifice on the mountain. Genesis 31:54.

In Joshua and Judges we read of Israel’s interesting and significant experiences in Mount Ebal, Mount Gerizim, Mount Hermon, Mount Bethel, Mount Seir, Mount Tabor, Mount Lebanon and Mount Ephraim. Mount Ephraim is mentioned in these two books 16 times. The first thing we read is, that Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God in Mount Ebal. (Joshua 8:30).

In 2 Samuel 15:32 we find that David is on the top of the mountain to worship God. In 2 Kings 4:25 we find Elisha, the man of God, in Mount Carmel.

Many great and terrible events have taken place from Mount Zion, but more wonderful events are yet to take place from Mount Zion . . . Read Psalms 48:2, 48:11, 74:2, 78:68, 125:1; Lamentations 5:18; Joel 3:17;
Revelation 14:1. ‘The Lord God shall reign over them in MOUNT ZION from henceforth, even forever.’ (Micah 4:7). Read of ‘MY HOLY MOUNTAIN’ in Isaiah 115, 56:7, 57:13, 65:11, 66:20. “MY HOLY MOUNTAIN JERUSALEM.” (Isaiah 66:20). Then read Isaiah 2423, 27:13, 31:4.

In Psalm 50:2, we read: ‘Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.’ Then again read Psalm 87:1 to 3: ‘The Lord is in. the holy mountains. The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all of the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of thee, 0 City of God.’

As we behold the discord, hatred, treachery and violence now in Zion, we remember the wonderful promise Zechariah 1:17: ‘The Lord shall yet comfort Zion and shall yet choose Jerusalem.’ From the mountains of Zion God commanded the blessing, even life forcvermore. (Psalm 133:3).

In 1 Kings 19:8 to 11 we read of Elijah in Horcb, the mountain of God, and God sent the strong wind and rent that mountain to teach Elijah the secret of power. In Nchemiah 8:14 to 18 we read how the children of Israel went to the mountains for the boughs for their booths.
In the coming kingdom age many nations shall come and say, ‘come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob.’ (Micah 4:2). We have observed that when the three apostles were on the holy mount with the transfigured Messiah and Prophet (Elijah) and Lawgiver (Moses) they beheld the coming of Christ (2 Peter 1:16 to 18).

Thus we learn that from the time God instructed Noah concerning the ark which rested on the mountains of Ararat (Genesis 8:4) when He made a covenant concerning man and the earth, from the time that Abraham had Isaac on the altar on Mount Moriah, from the time that Moses met God in the mountains to receive instructions for the deliverance of Israel, from the many instructions given Israel from Mount Sinai, and the death of Moses on Mount Nebo, the MOUNTAINS of the Bible generally speak of EARTHLY COVENANTS … EARTHLY BLESSINGS AND EARTHLY JUDGMENTS.

Christ was up on the mountain when Satan showed Him earthly kingdoms. In Revelation 14:1 we read, “lo, a LAMB stood on Mount Zion.” Litde wonder we read in Psalm 48:2 ‘Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING.’

When Israel’s redemption will be at hand the Kingdom of God will be established on earth. (Luke 21:27 to 33). God will send Christ back to earth from heaven for the restitution of all things spoken by the prophets since the world began. (Acts 3:19 to 21). His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:1 to 9). He shall be king over all the earth. (Vs. 9). The Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached as a witness in all the world and THEN SHALL THE END COME. (Matthew 24:14). Israel shall be saved by the coming of Christ out of Zion (Romans 11:26). When ? When the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. (Romans 11:25). Israel will not see their King and Messiah until they say, ‘Blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord.’ (Matthew 23:39). Then Israel shall look on Him Whom they pierced. (Zechariah 12:10). This will be when the Son of Man cometh in the clouds. (Revelation 1:7 and Luke 21:27). Then Israel shall be planted in their land. (Amos 9:11 to 15; Ezekiel 3634). On the mountains of Israel. (Ezckiel 37:22).

In 2 Peter 1:18 we have the testimony of Peter that ‘we were with Him (Christ) in the holy mount.’ There were five Jews on that mountain, besides the Lord Jesus Christ. (Matthew 17:1 to 13). There, said Peter, we beheld Christ’s power and His coming. (2 Peter 1:16). Moses was one of the men on that mountain. There he was transfigured. That was not the only mountain experience of Moses. He had been on other holy mountains. Moses went up into the mountain of God. (Exodus 34:13). The Lord came down upon Mount Sinai. (Exodus 19:20). The Lord spake unto Moses in Mount Sinai. (Leviticus 25:1). On that mountain God wrote with His finger on the tables of stone, giving to Moses, for Israel, the ten commandments. (Exodus 20). In Deuteronomy 32:49 and 50 we learn that Moses was directed to Mount Nebo for his death. There Satan contended with Michael for the body of Moses. (Jude 9). From the mountain where Moses died he could see over into the land of promise, later known as ‘the land of the Jews.’ (Acts 10:39). Moses died outside the land on a mountain. He was transfigured inside the land on a mountain.

Hagar, the bond-woman, and Ishmael her son, by Abram, spoke of the yoke of bondage given at Sinai. (Acts 15:10 . . . Galatians 5:1 and 4:24 and 25). The law given at Sinai was Israel’s schoolmaster to bring them to Christ. (Galatians 3:24 and 25).

Concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, Who was made under the law (Galatians 4:4), Who was a Minister of the circumcision for a confirmation (fulfillment) ministry for Israel (Romans 15:8 and Matthew 15:24), we read in Luke 22:39, ‘as He was wont. He went to the MOUNT OF OLIVES.’ (Read Matthew 21:1, 24:3, 26:30; Luke 19:29, 21:37; John 8:1).

When the devil tempted the Lord Jesus he took Him up into an exceeding HIGH MOUNTAIN and showed Him His worldly kingdoms. (Luke 4:5 to 7). We have all heard of The Sermon on the Mount . . . Christ went up into a mountain. (Matthew 5:1). Then we read in Matthew 15:29, in Mark 3:13, John 6:3 and 15, of Christ’s going into mountains. In Mark 6:46, Luke 6:12, 9:28 and Matthew 14:23 we read that Christ went to the mountains to pray. After Christ fed the 5000 and the people wanted to make Him King He retired to the mountain. (John 6:15).

THE COMMISSION FROM THE MOUNTAIN

When Christ gave to the ELEVEN the so-called great commission of Matthew 28:19 and 20 He met His apostles in the appointed MOUNTAIN. (Matthew 28:16). Christ had already told these apostles that when He does establish His Kingdom on earth, with Himself as Judge and King, these apostles would sit on twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel. (Matthew 19:27 and 28 … Matthew 2531 to 34). He had also told them that before they had gone over the dries of Israel the Son of man would come. (Matthew 10:23). Any command or order or commission that Christ gave was a “great commission,’ because He was, and is, a GREAT CHRIST. So the commission of Matthew 10:5 to 9 was a great commission. It was given to the TWELVE for Israel; but not for Gentiles.

We have mentioned that Christ’s farewell visit on earth with His twelve apostles was on the Mount of Olives and at that place the servants of the Lord assured the Twelve that the same Jesus would come back to earth in like manner. (Acts 1:11 and Zechariah 14:1 to 9). At that time Christ had given the Eleven the commission of Matthew 28:19 and 20. A short time thereafter the number Eleven had to be increased to TWELVE. (Acts 1 ‘26). If God was not going to again, immediately and very definitely deal with Israel, He would not have been interested in having TWELVE apostles. There were TWELVE from Acts 1:26 to Acts 12:1 and 2. And as TWELVE is the number of Israel, surely God was dealing with Israel, from Acts 1:26 to Acts 12:2, as He has not dealt with them since. In this connection we should remember Matthew 1927 and 28 and Matthew 10:23; that the TWELVE are to sit on twelve thrones and judge the TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL when Christ returns to be a King and a Judge on His earthly throne (Matthew 25:31); and the Son of man was to return before the TWELVE had gone over the cities of Israel. Perhaps this will help us to understand why the TWELVE remained in Jerusalem at the time of the great persecution, when the Jewish disciples were
scattered and went forth to preach to none but Jews only. (Acts 8:1 and 11:19). (Galadans 1:17 and 2:1 and 9 to 11).

THE SO-CALLED GREAT COMMISSION

Then the ELEVEN disciples went away into Galilee, INTO A MOUNTAIN, where Jesus had appointed them! .. . ‘Go yc therefore, and teach (disciple) all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world (age).’ Did the apostles do this? (Acts 8:1-15; 15:1 to 19; Galatians 2:11).

After the resurrection of Christ and before His ascension He was seen of His apostles, “speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.’ (Acts 13). He had told them that the ‘END’ would come when the GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM had been preached as a witness in all the world. (Matthew 24:14). This was a part of Christ’s answer to the apostles’ question, ‘what shall be the sign of thy coming and of the END of the world (age) ?’ (Matthew 24:3). Israel was not to see Christ again until He would come as the Son of man in the cloud with power and great glory and they would say ‘blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord.’ (Luke 21:27 and Matthew 23:39). What ‘END’ came when Paul had preached the gospel all over the world? (Colossians 1:6 and 1:23).

As we carefully study the Book of Acts we learn that the apostle Paul made his headquarters in Antioch of Syria, in Corinth, in Ephcsus and in Rome; and in the Book of Acts we have the record of several of Paul’s missionary journeys. In the Book of Acts we learn that the TWELVE made their headquarters in Jerusalem: (Acts 8:1 … Acts 15). And in that Book we have no record of even one missionary journey of the TWELVE outside the land of the Jews. Where is the ‘ACTS’ record that they preached to Gentiles other than the household of Cornelius?
PETER AND PAUL

When Peter was first saved and commissioned he was sent by Christ to Israel. ‘Go not into the way of the Gentiles.’ (Matthew 10:5 to 7). When Paul was first saved and commissioned by Christ he was to bear His Name to Gentiles, kings and the Children of Israel. (Acts 9:15). About 10 years after Peter, and the Eleven, received their commission of Matthew 10:5 to 7, Peter, in a ’sheet’ vision, was ordered to preach to a very religious, devout, praying Gentile, who gave money to the Jews and was of good report among them. (Acts 10:1 and 2, 10:22 and 1038). Some time after Paul (Saul) received his orders in Acts 9:15 he saw Christ in a vision in the Jerusalem temple and to Paul Christ said, ‘I will send you far hence to the Gentiles.’ (Acts 22:21). Later on the apostle Paul magnified (glorified) his office as the apostle to, or of, the Gentiles. (Romans 11:13). Read I Timothy 2:7; II Timothy 1:11; Ephesians 3:8; Romans 15:16; Ephcsians 3:1 to 3.

In the meantime Paul and Peter, with other apostles, had reached the agreement that Peter, James and John should go to Jews and Paul should go to Gentiles. (Galatians 2:9). However, Paul thereafter continued to go to the Jews first and also the Gentiles, even becoming a Jew to the Jews. (I Corinthians 9:20 to 25). In Acts 19:10 we read that, because of Paul’s
ministry, ‘all they which dwelt in Asia heard the Word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Gentiles.’ Then for a very definite reason it is recorded that several years later, ‘all they that which are in Asia be turned away from me (Paul).’ (2 Timothy 1:15).

Concerning the ministry of the TWELVE to the Gentiles, we find little in the Book of Acts or in Paul’s Epistles; but we do know that the Eleven were not pleased when Peter preached to a Jew-loving, God-fearing Gentile some seven years after the commission of Matthew 28:19 and 20 until after Peter had done much explaining: and then they rejoiced. (Acts 11:1 to 18). Several years later Peter reminded his fellow-apostles that God had chosen that by Peter’s mouth the gospel should be preached to Gentiles. (Acts 15:7). It was at about the very same time that Peter and his fellow-apostles agreed to go to the Jews. (Galatians 2:9).

So to any thinking, spiritual student of the Scriptures this question must present itself, how could the TWELVE preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15) and disciple all nations (Matthew 28:19 and 20), as Christ commanded them to do, when they remained in Jerusalem and agreed to preach to Jewish creatures? In the light of the commission to the ELEVEN, in Matthew 28:19 and 20, it seems that Acts 8:1 should inform us that the TWELVE left Jerusalem to carry out the great commission and the other disciples remained there. But the very opposite is stated. And to whom did the scattered disciples preach? To Jews only. (Acts 11:19). In the light of Acts 11:19, to whom did Philip preach in Samaria? (Acts 8:5).

CHRISTS COMMISSION TO PAUL

The conversion of Saul of Tarsus is recorded in Acts 9:1 to 15. Saul (Paul) was saved outside the land of the Jews. Christ Jesus, the Lord, counted Paul faithful and put him into the ministry, as one born out of due season, and as a pattern. (I Timothy 1:12 … I Corinthians 15:8 and I Timothy 1:16). Paul was not saved by the preaching of any of the TWELVE, but by Christ’s own preaching. Paul was the only unsaved unbeliever who, on earth, saw Christ after His resurrection. After Paul (Saul) was saved he conferred not with flesh and blood: neither did he go up to Jerusalem to confer with the TWELVE. (Galatians 1:15 to 17). When he did visit them some years later, in conference they added nothing to him. But contrariwise they learned that Paul had, by revelation, received from Christ a ministry and grace program somewhat different from the commission and program that Christ had given to the TWELVE. (Galatians 2:1 to 13). Paul received his “grace* gospel by revelation from Jesus Christ. (Galatians 1:11 and 12). Later on, by revelation, he received from Christ in heaven, ‘the dispensation of the grace of God’ for Gentiles, ‘the unsearchable riches of Christ’ for Gentiles, ‘the dispensation of the mystery,’ ‘the mystery among the Gentiles.’ (Ephesians 3:1 to 9 and Colossians “1:24 to 27). Paul was caught away to the third heavens, paradise, to receive an abundance of revelations. (2 Corinthians 12:1 to 12). His commission came not ‘FROM THE MOUNTAIN,’ but from above the mountains.

Paul explains his distinctive ‘grace* message and ministry to the Gentiles, in Romans 11:30, that the Gentiles obtained God’s mercy, because of Israel’s unbelief. Paul was directed to turn to Gentiles when and because Israal would not receive the Word of God. (Acts 13:46).
Salvation, by Paul, was sent to the Gentiles, to provoke Israel to jealousy. When and because Israel was cast away reconciliation was sent to Gentiles. (Romans 11:15). The diminishing of the Jews brought riches to the Gentiles. (Romans 11:12). None of this was contemplated in the commission of Matthew 28:19 and 20, in the gospel of the kingdom as a witness to all the world to bring the end of the age.

In the gospel of the kingdom the Gentiles obtain God’s mercy and salvation when and because Israel believes. This has now been postponed until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in and then Israel’s salvation. (Roman 11:25 and 26). Then the Jews will become the missionaries to the Gentiles in and with God’s kingdom program.

So Christ’s commission from above the mountains is the ministry and message of RECONCILIATION which began when and because Israel, through unbelief, was cast away. Thus we turn to 2 Corinthians 5:16 to 21 and Romans 5:10 and 11:15 for our commission and learn that for two reasons Gentiles can be reconciled to God and obtain God’s mercy, because of the death of Christ and because of Israel’s rejection of Christ in resurrection as well as in incarnation. (I John 2:2; Romans 5:10, 11:15 and 11:30). Then the dispensation of the mystery began and God’s spiritual programs in connection with the Bible mountains were postponed.

In our new book, “THE MOST WONDERFUL TRUTH IN THE BIBLE,” we have explained the difference between ‘THE PROPHESIED KINGDOM OF GOD PREPARED FROM THE FOUNDATION (OVERTHROW) OF THE WORLD,’ and “THE UNPROPHESIED KINGDOM OF GOD PURPOSED IN CHRIST FROM BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.” The first kingdom is both spiritual and political and of it mountains in the Bible speak. The Son of Man will be on this earthly throne. (Matthew 25:31 and 34). The second kingdom of God is spiritual and was revealed by Christ, to and through Paul, from the heavenlies, above the mountains; concerning the heavenly hope, heavenly calling, heavenly blessings and heavenly conflict of members of the un-prophesicd Body of Christ.

The End

The Riches of The Lord of Glory _________ Past-Tracing-Out - Pastor J. C. O’Hair

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The faithful steward of the mysteries of God (1 Corinthians 4:1 to 4), to whom the Holy Spirit has taught the truth recorded in the eleventh chapter of Romans, will understand why Paul closed the chapter with, “0 the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How ‘UNSEARCHABLE’ (’ANEXEREUNTOS’) are His judgments, and His ways ‘PAST-TRACING-OUT’ (’ANEXICHNIASTOS’).”

The Greek words in this verse translated ‘UNSEARCHABLE’ and ‘PAST-TRACING-OUT are rather long words. The first word ‘ANEXEREUNTOS’ is the negative of the Greek word, in 1 Peter 1:10, translated ‘SEARCHED DILIGENTLY’ (’EXERUNAO’). The second word ‘ANEXICHNIASTOS,’ translated ‘PAST-TRACING-OUT’ (revised version), is the negative of ‘ICHNOS’ which means ‘STEP’ or TRACK.’ This word ‘ANEXICHNIASTOS’ is, in Ephesians 3:8, translated UNSEARCHABLE.’. ‘PAST-TRACING-OUT’ is perhaps a. better translation. The Holy Spirit would have every Christian know that THE ETERNAL PURPOSE OF GOD’ (Ephesians 1:11 …. 1:4 and 5), , is an unprophesied Divine program. It was ‘KEPT SECRET SINCE THE WORLD BEGAN’ (Romans 16:25), HID IN GOD FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD’ (Ephesians 3:9), ‘HID FROM AGES AND FROM GENERATIONS’ (Colossians 1:26). Having been God’s own unrevealed SECRET, it was called THE MYSTERY.’

This ‘UNPROPHESIED’ Divine program is mentioned in Ephesians 1:9 as THE MYSTERY OF GOD’S WILL.’ In Ephesians 3:3 Paul declared “THAT BY REVELATION HE (CHRIST) MADE KNOWN UNTO ‘ME’ THE MYSTERY.” In 2 Timothy 1:12 we leam, in the Greek, that Paul wrote of MY DEPOSIT’ (’PARATHEKE’). Because Paul received that ‘DEPOSIT,’ (Ephesians 3:2 … Colossians 1:23 to 26), and because he was faithful in proclaiming it, he was THE PRISONER OF JESUS CHRIST FOR GENTILES’ (Ephesians 3:1….. 4:1), -AN AMBASSADOR IN BONDS’ (Ephesians 6:19 and 20… Colossians 4:3 and 4). Paul wrote, “WHEREIN I SUFFER TROUBLE, AS AN EVIL-DOER, UNTO BONDS.” (2 Timothy 2:9).

Paul urged members of the Body of Christ to pray for open doors, open mouths and open minds and hearts for the proclamation and acceptance of this ‘UNPROPHESIED,’ ‘PREDESTINATED,’ ‘ETERNAL PURPOSE OF GOD,’ which he called THE MYSTERY OF CHRIST,’ THE PREACHING OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO THE REVELATION OF THE MYSTERY KEPT SECRET SINCE THE WORLD BEGAN’… (Ephesians 6:19 and 20 .. . Colossians 4:3 and 4… Ephesians 1:15 to 19 Romans 16:25 …Ephesians 1:11).

‘ In comprehending and proclaiming this wonderful truth, God’s saints are viciously opposed by the ruler of the world darkness, spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies, because Satan’s principalities and powers are involved in the message and program. (Ephesians 6:12). To these principalities and powers in the heavenlies the Church is expected to make known the manifold wisdom of God. (Ephesians 3:10). But Satan, up to the present time, has been eminently successful in keeping most Christian workers from obeying Ephesians 3:9 and 10.

Of course, Christian workers should know the full meaning and truth of 1 Corinthians 2:6. .. “WE SPEAK WISDOM AMONG THEM THAT ARE PERFECT.” The ‘PERFECT’ are Christians of ‘FULL AGE,’ numbered with those to whom belongs THE STRONG MEAT’ (Hebrews 5:12 to 14), ‘NO MORE CHILDREN, TOSSED TO AND FRO’ (Ephesians 4:14), ‘ESTABLISHED BY THE PREACHING OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO THE REVELATION OF THE MYSTERY’ (Romans 16:25), ‘OF POWER AND LOVE AND A SOUND MIND’ (2 Timothy 1:7). ‘UNASHAMED WORKMEN, RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH.’ (2 Timothy 2:15).

The Hidden Wisdom

Note the wisdom among them that are perfect “we speak the wisdom of God in a MYSTERY (SECRET), THE HIDDEN; which God ordained ‘BEFORE THE WORLD’ unto our glory. Which none of the rulers of this world knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the LORD OF GLORY.” (1 Corinthians 2:7 to 8). The Lord directed Peter to tell Israel that it must have been ignorance that caused them to KILL THE PRINCE OF LIFE. (Acts 3:14 to 17). Later on, the Holy Spirit directed Peter to write that Christ’s death on the cross was foreordained and planned by God before Adam sinned, before the world began. (1 Peter 1:18 to 21).

When the rulers of this world crucified THE LORD OF GLORY, when the religious leaders of Christ’s own chosen nation fulfilled all the Scriptures that prophesied concerning the Saviour’s once-for-all suffering on the TREE (Acts 13:29), they did nothing concerning the death of the Son of God, that God’s hand and counsel had not already determined before would be done. (Acts 4:26 to 29). If you will read carefully John 12:37 to 41 and Acts 17:3, you will see that in the fulfillment of Psalm 118:22 and 23, the rejection and crucifixion of Christ was in God’s Plan…. “And it is marvelous in our eyes.” (Matthew 21:42). When wicked men with wicked hands put Christ to death He was delivered according to the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. (Acts 2:23).

When the Lord of Glory came down from heaven He came unto His own and His own received Him not. (John 1:11). The Holy Spirit and .God’s heavenly messengers declared that Christ was bom of the virgin Mary, in fulfillment of the Scriptures, that He was bom to occupy David’s throne and reign over Israel (Luke l:27′to 33), to give to Israel ‘the sure mercies of David’ (Acts 13:34 Luke 1:67 to 77). delivering Israel from sin. He was THE SON OF GOD!’… THE KING OF ISRAEL’ (John 1:49), sent to Israel (Matthew 15:24 . . . Acts 13:23), to confirm promises to Israel recorded in the thirty-nine Books from Genesis to Malachi. (Romans 15:8). (Tie was Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews, their promised Messiah. As He came to fulfill Isaiah 35:4 to 6,61; 1 to 3, Ezekiel, 34:11 to 13 and 22 to 31, He began His ministry in the midst of Israel by proclaiming the time at hand. The Kingdom of God at hand’ (.Mark 1:14 and 15 … Matthew 4:17). He went into Israel’s synagogues preaching, healing all manner of disease (Matthew 4:23), in fulfillment of Isaiah 35:3 to 6, and proclaiming the fulfillment of Isaiah 61:1 to 3. (Luke 4:16 to 23).

But the builders rejected the Stone (Luke 19:41 to 44). However, the Stone (Christ) assured Israel He would return in the clouds with power and great glory (Luke 21:27 to 33). He told them that when He returned to earth He would sit on the THRONE of His glory, as Judge as well as King. (Matthew 25:31 to 34). Later on we are told in Romans 11:25 to 29 that the KING will not return until this present age has run its course. After the revelation of Romans 11:25, the risen Lord, through Paul, revealed the truth of Ephesians 1:4 and 5 and 2:15, showing the difference between the PROPHESIED KINGDOM OF GOD, and THE BODY OF CHRIST.

The Tree… The Tribulation… The Throne ____The Mystery Body__

As we compare Genesis 2:21 to 24 and 5:2 with Ephesians 5:31 and 32, we will learn that the truth of Christ and the Church, was just once ‘HID IN THE SCRIPTURES.’ * Then as we compare Genesis 15:6 to 8 with Galatians 3:6 to 8, we will see that Galatians 2:7 was ‘HID IN THE SCRIPTURES.’ Then compare Deuteronomy 32:21 and Romans 10:19. There is a difference between Divine truth ‘HID IN THE SCRIPTURES’, and truth ‘HID IN GOD FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD”. (Ephesians 3:9 and Colossians 1:26). No prophet of Israel knew or said anything concerning Christ as the Head of the Church, Which is His Body, the Filling-up of Him that filleth all in all (Ephesians 1:19 to 23), THE ONE NEW MAN’ of Ephesians 2:15, or that members of Christ’s Body would be raised up and seated in the heavenlies in Christ (Ephesians 2:5 and 6 … Colossians 3:1 to 3), and there blessed with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies. (Ephesians 1:3).

During this age. God, Who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will, will accomplish His own ‘ETERNAL PURPOSE,’ not prophesied but predestinated. The prophets of Israel, before Christ came, could have SEARCHED DILIGENTLY concerning the PROPHESIED TREE, TRIBULATION AND THRONE, THE SUFFERING OF CHRIST AND THE GLORY THAT SHOULD FOLLOW (1 Peter 1:10 and 11). This was confirmed by Christ in John 5:39 and Luke 24:25 to 27 and 24:46. When Paul preached to Israel ‘NONE OTHER THINGS’ than Divine truth concerning Christ, foretold by Moses and Israel’s other prophets (Acts 26:22 and 23 and 17:3), Israel could have searched their Scriptures to leam, if Paul was telling the truth. (Acts 17:11). Peter told Israel that they had a more sure Word of Prophecy. (2 Peter 1:19). Christ on earth was confirming that Prophecy. (Romans 15:8). Compare Matthew 21:42 … Acts 4:26 to 29 … Isaiah 9:7 … Acts 15:17 and 18 and Ephesians 1:11, with Romans 11:25, and you will better understand the why of Romans 11:33, “0 THE DEPTH OF THE RICHES BOTH OF THE WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE OF GOD! HOW UNSEARCHABLE (’ANEXEREUNTOS’) ARE HIS JUDGMENTS, AND HIS WAYS PAST-TRACING-OUT (’ANEXICHNIASTOS’).”

All of our sins are forgiven, for Christ’s sake. (Ephesians 4:32 and Colossians 2:13). God in this age and dispensation of grace is reconciling all believing sinners in one Body by the cross. (Ephesians 2:15 to 18). Now we understand Ephesians 3:8 to 11; “UNTO ME (PAUL), WHO AM LESS THAN THE LEAST OF ALL SAINTS. IS THIS GRACE GIVEN, THAT I SHOULD PREACH AMONG THE NATIONS THE UNSEARCHABLE (’PAST-TRACING-OUT1) RICHES OF CHRIST (THE LORD OF GLORY) AND TO MAKE ALL SEE WHAT IS THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE MYSTERY, WHICH FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD HATH BEEN HID IN GOD … TO THE INTENT THAT NOW UNTO THE PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS IN THE HEAVENLIES MIGHT BE KNOWN BY THE CHURCH THE MANIFOLD WISDOM OF GOD, ACCORDING TO THE ETERNAL PURPOSE WHICH HE PURPOSED IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD.”

Will you pray for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation mentioned in Ephesians 1:17, and then will you do your duty as a Christian and MAKE ALL SEE WHAT IS THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE MYSTERY?.

SHOULD A CHRISTIAN GO TO WAR? - Pastor J. C. O’Hair

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Today’s headlines—“Britons Fleeing Rumania,” “All Americans ordered Out of China,” “Japan Warns United States,” “Administration Getting Ready For Any Move by Japan,” “The United States Headed For War.”
Christians are much exercised. The conscription bill has been passed. Young men in the United States will be called to arms. They may be called to use arms in war.
In this morning’s paper is printed the statement of a Wisconsin Methodist preacher to his congregation concerning his decision not to respond to the nation’s call to military training. He declares a Christian cannot be a fighting soldier.

SHOULD A CHRISTIAN GO TO WAR?

This is a very important question just at this time. Many conscientious Christians are troubled as to their Christian duty, and they are giving serious thought as to what they shall do, if the Government orders them into military training.
All Christians praise God for the material things that we have as Americans, for the liberty that is ours. All Americans, including those who are Christians, appreciate the very special national blessings that we enjoy, Just now, surely we should consider ourselves fortunate to be citizens of this country.
Our forefathers had to sacrifice their lives that we might enjoy our liberty and our material blessings. Those of us in this generation enjoy wonderful privileges because patriots of another generation were willing to shed their blood and die. They went to war to obtain our freedom of worship under our bill of rights. Many of them were consecrated Christians. Surely a citizen of this country, whether a Christian or not, is an unworthy ingrate who will enjoy the freedom and blessings made possible by other men who fought for America and refuse to respond to the call of the nation to defend and maintain our high standards of justice, privilege and liberty.
Since the days that God first gave to man the responsibility of governing his fellow﷓men there have been ungodly and unjust rulers. We constantly hear, in our own days, of crooked politicians, unjust judges, bribed jurors, greed, graft and corruption in city, county, state and national government. This will continue until the Ruler, described in Isaiah 11:1 to 11, arrives: “And shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord; and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes; neither reprove after the hearing of His ears; But with righteousness shall He judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth; and He shall smite the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked.” Isaiah 11:3 and 4.
As we carefully study the history of nations and read the headlines concerning the European rulers of today, we should be ready to accept as truth the devil’s statement in Luke 4:5 and 6: “And the devil, taking Him up into an high mountain, shewed unto Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto Him, All this power will I give Thee, and the glory of them; for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.”
No government, since the days of Christ, has ever granted to Christians such freedom and religious liberty to believe and propagate the blessed truths of the Bible, as has this country of ours. Christians should not only continuously thank God for our constitution and bill of rights, and pray to God that the rulers will see that the liberties vouchsafed in them shall not be taken from us, but Christians should support those political rulers who are determined to defend and perpetuate them. Christians should, by no means, hinder any military action against any enemy foreign nation that seeks to overthrow our government and seeks to deprive us of our blood﷓bought rights. Note the Christian’s prayer duty: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and honesty.”

THE CHRISTIAN AND THE GOVERNMENT

How ignorant and foolish is the Christian, or any organized group of Christians, who seeks to interfere with the nation’s preparation for war, especially when that preparation is for defense against an “aggressor” nation. As Americans we should profit by the folly, error and negligence of England and France. As Christians we should heartily support our government and nation as they see to it that we do not make the same blunder, remembering the plain teaching of God’s Word that the government is the minister of God for the good of Christians. Romans 13:1 to 8.
Christians apply to the powers that be for legal permits to proclaim the gospel on street corners, or in public parks, and then ask for and expect police protection in case of any unlawful disturbance on the part of some person who is an enemy of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Christians, as well as sinners, ask for the benefits and privileges that are made possible by rendering unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, that is, public benefactions paid for by taxes. Christians own property and should be law﷓abiding citizens. They should respect and obey the laws of the land and be subject to the powers that be, which are ordained of God.
It is nonsense to regard the saluting of the national flag in this country an act of worship and therefore the sin of idolatry forbidden in the Bible. Christians should be willing to join the three Hebrews in the fiery furnace, or Daniel in the lion’s den, before they worship any man or the image of any man or woman. But every intelligent individual knows that no political or civil authority or ruler in this country has ever made such a demand. It is possible, that if Christians did not have the protection of our government in defending our rights to religious freedom, they might be forced by certain religious potentates to worship images, or suffer the consequences.

JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES

The religious people, known as Jehovah’s witnesses, followers of Judge Rutherford and Pastor Charles T. Russell, have been having some trouble with civil authorities. They have displayed ignorance of the Word of God in their attitude and action. They have been most inconsistent in refusing to salute the flag of the United States, or respond to the nation’s call to arms, while, at the same time, they will call for police protection and appeal to the United States courts to protect them in their disloyalty to their government. They get under the flag for protection but refuse to defend it or respect it. They are not asked by the government to worship the flag.
The members of this religious sect do not know the first thing about obedience to II Timothy 2:15: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.” They do not know what it means to rightly divide the Word of Truth, hence, they are workmen who need to be ashamed, not only in their disloyalty to their flag and nation, but in their propagation of an unscriptural message and program, which is a far more serious blunder, for Jesus Christ said: “Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28.
Jehovah’s witnesses usurp the kingdom place of the nation Israel, and not only mix law and grace, but they confuse the Messianic earthly kingdom of the Prince of Peace, with the Body of Christ seated in the heavenlies while Israel is set aside and the Messianic kingdom is in abeyance. They claim that their elect group will be the 144,000 Israelites of Revelation. They seek to rob the Lord Jesus Christ of His eternal Deity. They preach rank heresy concerning the bodily resurrection of the Son of God. They know nothing of the Pauline gospel of the grace of God and make no attempt to obey Ephesians 3:9. They place the kingdom of Jesus of Nazareth in the dispensation of the grace of God. Ephesians 3:1 to 3. They frustrate the grace of God. They pervert the gospel of grace. They subvert and deceive souls. And as they are in such darkness and heresy in the more important issues of life, it is not surprising that they propagate such unscriptural theories concerning the Christian’s responsibility to the government.

THE INTERNATIONAL CHURCH

From 600 B. C. up to the present time, we have been living “in the times of the Gentiles,” politically; that is, under Gentile government. Since the radical change mentioned in the eleventh chapter of Romans, we have lived in the times of the Gentiles spiritually. In Jesus Christ, however, there is neither Jew nor Gentile: “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one Body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” I Corinthians 12:13. “Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain One New Man, so making peace.” Ephesians 2:15. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free; there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28.
According to these verses the Christians in the United States know they are united to the Christians of England, France, Germany, Italy, China, and Japan, in an inseparable and eternal union, all redeemed by the grace of God and the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. In a sense they are bound by a tie that is more enduring and more precious than the tie that binds us together as citizens of the land we love. Christian Americans are naturally linked up with other Americans who are going to eternal perdition, because they believe not on Christ.
In the United States army and navy Christian Americans train and fight side by side with unsaved Americans. In eternity they will be separated. Christian Americans may kill Christians of other nations in war. They will be together in eternity.
What about the clash then between Christianity and patriotism? Some ask why should a Christian take arms with unsaved Americans and go forth to kill Christians of another nation at war with America? We behold the tragedy in the present world war, English Jews warring against German and Italian Jews, English Catholics and Protestants killing German and Italian Catholics and Protestants. Surely a deplorable state exists, and Christians are presented with many problems and questions. The true saint of God, who knows the truth concerning God’s one Church, and His purpose in this age, is an internationalist, in the sense that the Christian Church is an international organization or organism.
How can an internationalist be a true patriot? Let us remember that there is no such thing as “a Christian nation.” Human reason, apart from the Scriptures, is not adequate. The Bible is the believer’s Guide Book. The Book says: “For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of Him who hath subjected the same in hope. Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” Romans 8:19 to 22.
This includes human creatures, saints and sinners alike. Peace on earth was proclaimed when Jesus Christ was born to take David’s throne. Peace on earth will be realized when Jesus Christ comes back to take David’s throne, but since the day that Paul said, “Lo, we turn to the Gentiles,” God has very definitely marked the difference between the Church and the State, the Christian’s spiritual duty, as a member of the Body of Christ, and his attitude and responsibility to the government that is functioning under such adverse circumstances and conditions, while Satan is still the prince of the world, the god of this age, and the prince of the power of the air.
When the Christian is called to arms and to war he is subject to the powers that be. The government, in such a case, is responsible to God for the Christian’s acts. The Christian expects police protection and the benefits guaranteed by the laws of the land. His plain Bible duty is to pay tribute and taxes to the government. Much of the tax money is used in purchasing implements of war and in training other men to fight, so as God’s Word states in I Corinthians 5:10, Christians must either heartily support the government as law﷓abiding, obedient citizens, or we must needs go out of the world.
Some Christians argue that our position is quite different from that of the Jews in Palestine under the iron rule of Caesar, or from that of the first Christians scattered through the Roman Empire, who had no voice in the enactment and enforcement of laws. The first century Christians were powerless to revise the laws or liberate themselves from the tyranny and injustice by voting. Christians in the United States are citizens of a democracy, or a republic, and are part of the government. Christians have the privilege and constitutional right to join with the unsaved in making the laws. Certainly Christian Americans and other Americans should act together to prevent war, if it can be done honorably.
It has been conclusively proved that war cannot be outlawed. By carefully studying the history of all nations together with the Bible, we learn that God has repeatedly permitted one “aggressor” nation to go to war with another nation, as His rod of punishment; and then has seen to it that the “aggressor” nation was humiliated and destroyed.
God knew the end from the beginning. Christ predicted that the end of this age would be with wars and rumors of wars. Every intelligent student of the Bible knows that wars will not cease until the Lord Jesus returns to earth as King. America should be fully prepared for war and no Christian has the Scriptural right to interfere with the nation’s preparations.

ISRAEL UNDER CAESAR AND ROME

As we consider the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth on earth, let us keep in mind that His nation was in complete subjection to a heathen monarch. At the time of Christ’s birth, Caesar Augustus decreed that the whole world should be taxed. Caesar Augustus was anything but a man of God. He was the world ruler and he was at the head of a mighty political organization. His predecessors had won their universal headship and power by conquest. Much blood had been shed in war. God’s chosen nation, because of sin, was subject to this heathen king and his government. In Deuteronomy 28:13, God told Israel that they would be the head and the Gentiles the tail, if Israel would hearken unto Him and obey His commandments. In Deuteronomy 28:44, God told Israel that they would be the tail and the Gentiles would be the head, if Israel did not hearken unto Him and obey His Word.
After disobeying God for many years Israel indeed became the tail about 600 B. C., when the king of Babylon went to Jerusalem, destroyed Israel’s city, and temple, and took over the government of the people. Note God’s words to King Nebuchadnezzar by the mouth of Daniel: “And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath He given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.” Daniel 2:38. Other Gentile rulers succeeded the Babylonian and Persian governments, until Greece was subdued by Rome. And God made Nebuchadnezzar, the Gentile idolater, head over Jews, over all of the human race.
The world would say that Jesus Christ was accidentally born in Bethlehem, but the Christian knows the Saviour was born there in fulfillment of Micah 5:2 and Isaiah 7:14. Christ was born there because a godly woman (Mary) had to obey a pagan ruler and go to that city to pay taxes. Israel was still the tail.
According to Luke 1:29 to 33 and 70 to 74, Jesus Christ was born in the city of David, of the seed of David, in the house of David, to take the throne of David as King of the Jews, and deliver Israel from Gentile domination and subjugation. But after He had presented Himself, and His Divine credentials to the rulers of Israel, He said unto His people, “If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace; but now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side. And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knowest not the time of thy visitation.” Luke 19:42 to 44.
Jesus Christ came unto His own and His own received Him not. They knew not the things of their peace, the time of their visitation; so the offer of the kingdom was withdrawn, and to them Christ said: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, but ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate; and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not; see Me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.” Luke 13:34 and 35.
“AND THEY SHALL FALL BY THE EDGE OF THE SWORD, AND SHALL BE LED AWAY CAPTIVE INTO ALL NATIONS; AND JERUSALEM SHALL BE TRODDEN DOWN OF THE GENTILES, UNTIL THE TIMES OF THE GENTILES BE FULFILLED.” LUKE 21:24. “AND THEN SHALL THEY SEE THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD WITH POWER AND GREAT GLORY. AND WHEN THESE THINGS BEGIN TO COME TO PASS, THEN LOOK UP, AND LIFT UP YOUR HEADS; FOR YOUR REDEMPTION DRAWETH NIGH.” LUKE 21:27 AND 28.
We are still living in the times of the Gentiles.
In presenting the long promised Messianic kingdom to Israel, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of Israel, proclaimed the spiritual program and laws of that kingdom in the Sermon on the Mount. Note His message to His disciples in Luke 12:32 and 33: “Fear not little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. “ Luke 12:32 and 33.
Jesus Christ was not surprised when Israel’s rulers hated Him without a cause, and delivered Him to Caesar’s government to be put to death: “But Jesus did not commit Himself unto them, because He knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for He knew what was in man.” John 2:24 and 25. “But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray Him.” John 6:64. “Then He took unto Him the Twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished, For He shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on; and they shall scourge Him, and put Him to death; and the third day He shall rise again.” Luke 18:31 to 33.

RENDER UNTO CAESAR

It was after His rejection by the rulers of Israel that the Son of God said: “ Shew Me the tribute money. And they brought unto Him a penny. And He said unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto Him, Caesar’s. Then saith He unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s. Matthew 22:19 to 21.
In this connection note Matthew 17:25 to 27: “And when He was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto Him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money; that take, and give unto them for Me and thee.’’
Surely it is all so unique and strange: the Creator of the human race on the earth in creature form, born under the governmental authority of an ungodly ruler. In I Timothy 6:15 to 17 the Holy Spirit speaks of the “appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. Which in His times He shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of Lords.” It was the King of kings and Lord of lords Who was born of the virgin Mary at the time she was obeying Caesar’s orders. More than thirty years later the virgin’s Son performed a miracle to pay His taxes, lest He and His disciples should offend Caesar’s government.
Christians are taught that Jesus Christ left us an example that we should walk in His steps, and therefore we should pay our taxes, whether or not we vote to put unsaved men in office.

THE COMING WARLESS AGE

Christians we rejoice in the fact that there is to be a warless age on this earth:
“And He shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” Micah 4:3.
Hear God’s own word.
“ The Heavens must retain Jesus Christ until the restitution of all things.” Acts 3:21.

THE RESTITUTION OF ALL THINGS

Can we depend upon the statement that God is going to send Jesus Christ back from heaven to earth to bring about the restitution of all things? We read in the Bible, “God cannot lie” and “God is not slack concerning His promises” “all of the promises of God are yea and amen in Christ Jesus;” Christ said, “all shall be fulfilled.” We read this truth in II Peter 1:19: “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.” The day is going to dawn. Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords, is coming back to earth. That return will be in power and great glory “ When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the Holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory.” Matthew 25:31.
Then the warless age shall begin. “He shall judge among the nations and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” Isaiah 2:4. “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” Isaiah 11:9. “Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world: and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?” I Corinthians 6:1 to 3.
Satan will be the Lord’s prisoner in the bottomless pit. Revelation 20:1 to 7. Israel will be planted in their own land and none shall pluck them up nor make them afraid. Amos 9:12 to 15, and Ezekiel 34:28. “They shall look upon Me Whom they have pierced. Zechariah 12:10. “They shall serve the Lord their God, and David their King, Whom I will raise up unto them.” Jeremiah 30:9. “I will take you from among the heathen and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.” Ezekiel 36:24.
So we have observed five facts plainly, dogmatically and definitely taught in the infallible Scriptures:
1. The Lord Jesus is going to call the members of His Body to glory before the great tribulation.
2. The Lord Jesus Christ is coming back to earth to save Israel out of their tribulation and to occupy the throne of David and be a real personal living King.
3. When the Lord Jesus returns to earth to establish His kingdom He is going to dethrone the present ruler of the world, Satan, and imprison him in the bottomless pit.
4. Israel will possess their own land with Jerusalem again their holy city,
5. The saints shall judge the world.
Any humble child of God, with even a superficial knowledge of the Bible, but with a heart of faith, knows that there will be no peace on earth until these five radical changes have taken place.
Until “the times of the Gentiles” shall be fulfilled there will be wars and rumors of wars, and the government should be fully prepared, well armed, not for aggression or conquest, but for defense against ungodly, blood thirsty tyrants. Certainly no Christian should place one straw in the way to interfere with this armament, but should endorse the government’s endeavors to protect its citizens from these enemies of righteous government.
But how about the words of the Lord Jesus concerning the sword?

SHALL WE SMITE WITH THE SWORD?

The Lord Jesus was asked this question by His apostles: “Lord, shall we smite with the sword?” Luke 22:49.
In other dispensations the Lord has ordered His people to smite with the sword. Note the battle of the Gideonites against the Midianites in Judges 7:22, “The Lord set every man’s sword against his fellow.”
Then Samson smote the Philistines with a great slaughter. Judges 15:8.
King Saul and the Israelites “smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.” I Samuel 14:48. God gave Saul specific orders to destroy the Amalekites, and because he spared some of them God was displeased with him. I Samuel 15:18 to 21.
David was in the will of God when he cut off the head of Goliath with the sword. I Samuel 17:51.
When the Jews were rebuilding Jerusalem at the Lord’s command, note that half of them worked while the other half protected them from their enemies with spears and habergeons. Nehemiah 4:16. Then note, “every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand a weapon, for the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. Nehemiah 4:18.
It is true that the coming of Christ somewhat changed God’s program. In this dispensation of grace Church and State are separated, but both are the powers of God to accomplish His purpose in this age.

THEY THAT TAKE THE SWORD

Now let us read what Christ said concerning the sword:
“And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt Thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But He turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” “And behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up thy sword into his place; for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels?” Luke 9:54 to 56, Matthew 26:51 to 53.
In neither instance was the Roman government officially concerned and we should study, “they that take the sword shall perish with the sword” in the light of Romans 13:4: “For he is the minister of God; he beareth not the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.”
Here we learn that the sword in the hands of the government is ordained of God, that the ruler with the sword in his hand is the minister of God, whether or not that ruler is a saved or unsaved man. But with this statement we should ever keep in mind the words recorded in Luke 4:5 to 7: “And the devil, taking Him up into an high mountain, shewed unto Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto Him, All this power will I give Thee, and the glory of them; for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If Thou therefore wilt worship Me, all shall be Thine.”
We may have difficulty in reconciling Satan’s claim with the statement “the powers that be are ordained of God.” But let us read Romans 13:1 to 7:
“Let ever; soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but God; the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God; and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then, not be afraid of the power? do that which is good and those shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For this cause pay ye tribute also; for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.”
In I Timothy 3:15 and 16 the Christian is exhorted to behave in the House of God, the Church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. In Romans 13:1 to 7 the Christian is told how to behave toward the government.
In this day of grace Church and State have been separated by God. Spiritually, the weapons of the Christian’s warfare are not carnal. The Church gives the gospel to the law﷓breaker. God has put the carnal weapons in the hands of the government. The government is to give the law to the law﷓breaker. The Christian is to be subject to the government in the enactment and enforcement of laws.

GOD’S DEALINGS WITH NATIONS

God has always ruled and overruled in the preservation of the nations whose people have been the most faithful in carrying on His program during the spiritual economy and generation in which the people lived. According to the Divine rule and principle, we feel that the United States and Great Britain will be the last of the present nations to be annihilated, because more than ninety per cent of the money and missionaries, carrying the real evangel of Christ to the heathen lands, are furnished by the United States and Great Britain. Moreover, more than eighty﷓five per cent of the true messengers of the grace of God, God’s message for this age, are Americans or Britains. In protecting these nations from the ungodly, selfish dictators who are resorting to brute force, and every diabolical device to deprive men and women of the privilege of worshipping God, according to the Bible, and proclaiming the gospel of the grace of God, without interference from civil and political despots, God expects the United States and Great Britain to defend themselves by warring against the enemies of God and Christianity. And surely in such defense and protection Christians cannot shirk their responsibility.
There is a difference between the Scriptural rights of the individual Christian to protect himself against persecution by his enemies, and the Divine authority of a nation, to protect itself against the invading army of an enemy nation, especially when it is evident that the rulers of the enemy nation are seeking to forbid its citizens and defeated victims to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and serve Him according to Bible instruction.
God definitely instructed the rulers of Israel to war against the Philistines and Assyrians. He told them to destroy the Amalekites. God very definitely led David when he decapitated Goliath. Because of the sins of the Jews, in fulfillment of II Samuel 7:14, God did permit Nebuchadnezzar to destroy Jerusalem and enslave the Jews; but what happened to Nebuchadnezzar? Let us note II Samuel 7:14 and Daniel 4:33: “I will be his father and He shall be my son. If he commit iniquity I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men.” “The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar; and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagle’s feathers, and his nails like bird’s claws.”
Yes, Pharaoh and his people afflicted Israel sorely; but what happened to Pharaoh and his army? They made their grave in the bottom of the Red Sea. Exodus 15:4. God buried them there. In this connection let us note, in Exodus 15:3, that Jehovah is “a Man of war.” In Isaiah 9:6 and 7, He is the Prince of Peace. He is coming to be the Prince of Peace; but how is He coming? “And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.” “And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations; and He shall rule them with a rod of iron; and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.” Revelation 19:11, 14 and 15.
Note Psalms 76:10 and Psalms 2:3 to 5: “Surely the wrath of man shall praise Thee; the remainder of wrath shalt Thou restrain.” “Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure:”
In Ephesians 1:11 we learn that God worketh all things after the counsel of His own will, and that God has a predestined purpose which He will accomplish during this day of grace. The dictators of Europe may join with antichrists, and the heathen murderer of Japan, to defeat God’s purpose; but all the armies of man and forces of Satan cannot thwart God’s purpose. Japan is making a serious blunder in prohibiting Christian messengers to preach God’s message to their people. God’s purpose and spiritual program is to complete the Body of Christ, made up of believing Jews and believing Gentiles from all nations: “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect Man, unto the measure and the stature of the fulness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:13.
King Saul opposed the cause of God and the servants of God, but when he came to death by self﷓destruction, he cried, “I have played the fool and have erred exceedingly.” I Samuel 26:21.
Some other kings are playing the fool now and many believe that at least one of these ungodly tyrants will leave this world by self﷓destruction. And then what? “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27.

I APPEAL TO CAESAR

Paul practiced what he preached.
Note Acts 19:21 and Acts 23:11: “After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” “And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of Me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.” Yes, Paul must go to Rome. Caesar must have the opportunity to hear God’s saving message from the heart and lips of the Lord’s prisoner, Paul. God assured Paul that he would get to Rome, but Paul did not calmly sit down and fold his arms and say, “you Jews and Romans try to kill me if you can; I am Divinely protected.” What really transpired? Read it in Acts 25:9 to 12: “But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me? Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged; to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest. For if I be an offender, or have committed anything worthy of death, I refuse not to die; but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar. Then Festus, when he, had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.”
Already the Roman government had saved Paul from death at the hands of the religious Jews, who claimed to be the exclusive people of God: “And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing that Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle. And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul; for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.” “And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.” Acts 23:10, 11 and 14.
Paul was the most spiritual, courageous, and fruitful Christian of all times. He was not afraid of death. Note his words in Acts 21:13: “I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus,” Later on, he said, “to die is gain, it is far better to depart and be with the Lord.” Philippians 1:21 and 23.
He wanted to finish his course and faithfully perform the task which the Lord Jesus Christ had committed to him. Acts 20:24. He always bore about in his body the dying of the Lord Jesus, always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake. II Corinthians 4:10 and 11. Paul believed for himself what he wrote in Romans 8:28: “All things work together for good to those who love the Lord.” He said, “Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.” Philippians 1:20. Paul said, “the Lord stood with me, and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.” II Timothy 4:17. Paul was persuaded that the living omnipotent Christ could keep him, but he said, “I appeal to Caesar.”
When Festus declared Paul’s cause unto the king, the Roman ruler said: “It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have license to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.” Acts 25:16. Paul said, “I stand at Caesar’s judgment seat.” Acts 25:10.
In the matter of rendering unto Caesar the things which were Caesar’s, Paul was very careful to practice what he preached. The religious leaders who claimed to be the servants of God, wanted the Roman authorities to either kill Paul, or let them kill him. These religious haters of Christ said of Paul and his fellow﷓servants, “all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar:” “These all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, One Jesus.” Acts 17:7. Festus declared that the only true accusation that could be brought against Paul was concerning “One Jesus, Which was dead, Whom Paul affirmed to be alive.” Acts 25:19.
Paul knew the truth written by another apostle, Peter: “But, and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye; and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled.” I Peter 3:14. Note also I Peter 3:15 and 16.
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience: that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.”
“Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.” I Peter 4:16.
Caesar’s sword saved Paul’s life from the angry religious mob. He was not only subject to the powers that be but he was protected by the Roman soldiers. He would have been as inconsistent as are some of our present﷓day theologians, if he had taught Christians to interfere with Caesar’s military forces.

CHRIST—THE CHRISTIAN—AND CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

When Jesus Christ spoke, in Matthew, He was a minister of the circumcision confirming promises which God made to Israel concerning their Messianic kingdom. Romans 15:8. That kingdom was at hand for Israel. Matthew 4:17—Matthew 15:24—Matthew 10:4 to 8. The Body of Christ was not at hand. The dispensation of the grace of God for Gentiles was not at hand. Ephesians 3:1 to 6. The Lord Jesus Christ was not instructing members of the Body of Christ as to their responsibility to the Roman king and government. In the Sermon on the Mount the Lord Jesus Christ was not abrogating God’s decree concerning capital punishment. That Divine decree is clearly set forth in Genesis 9:6: “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made He man.”
Let us remember that Noah found grace in the sight of God about 900 years before the law was added at Sinai. Genesis 6:8. Noah was not an Old Testament saint. The Testament (Covenant), made old by Christ’s death on the cross, was added in Exodus 20 was about 2500 years after Adam left Eden. Noah was not under the law. He was the recipient of God’s grace.
After the law was added, at Sinai, many times it is recorded concerning certain law﷓breakers, “they shall surely be put to death.” During the first 900 years that Israel was under the law Church and State were united by God’s order. To Israel, God committed religious and spiritual laws, civil and criminal laws, domestic and sanitary laws. During the centuries that Israel was both Church and State their rulers were authorized and instructed to enact and enforce many laws with which the members of the Church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth, have nothing to do, except as they are citizens subject to the powers that be. Some of these laws were brought over into this present economy of grace; and the responsibility of their enactment and enforcement was placed in the hands of the minister of God who beareth not the sword in vain, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Romans 13:4. By God’s decree, Church and State, in the economy of grace, are separated. The sword is in the hand of the government. The government applies the law to the law﷓breaker. There must be adequate penalty for the transgression of the civil laws, and the law must be enforced, otherwise a reign of crime, lawlessness and anarchy will result.
The members of the Body of Christ are to be evangelical in creed and evangelistic in action, remembering the words of John 3:17: “For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.” The Church is the custodian and dispenser of the spiritual law called “the spirit of life in Christ Jesus.” Note Romans 8:1 to 4: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
But let the Christian remember that it is in the same Epistle of grace (Romans 13:1 to 9) that the member of the Body is instructed as to his responsibility to the government.
God Himself instituted capital punishment, demanding the death penalty for the shedding of human blood, because man was made in the image of God. We might expect an evolutionist to advocate the abolition of capital punishment but not a Christian who accepts the inspired Ward of God as his guide. We repeat that capital punishment, or the death penalty, was not instituted under the law, but long before the law was given at Sinai. It is confirmed and continued under this grace testimony, in Romans 13, and therefore the Lord Jesus never intended, in the Sermon on the Mount, to abrogate or abolish it, as far as the government is concerned.

THE FOLLY OF POSTMILLENNIALISM

In the last world war we beheld the folly of the Postmillennial pacifists in the various denominational churches. They preached against preparations for war, as well as against participation in war; and later on, many of them were displaying above their pulpits the flags of all the allies, and their churches almost became recruiting stations.
The fallacy of Postmillennialism has had much to do with the unsaved politicians’ estimate, ideas and doubts about Christianity. There is not one line of Scripture to support the kingdom theories of the Postmillenarians. They teach that God’s purpose and program, during this age of grace, is to bring in the kingdom, the universal reign of peace and righteousness, that as the result of preaching Christianity and Christianizing the nations, having the legislative bodies enact laws based upon the Sermon on the Mount the ethics of Jesus, the golden age, or the millennium, will come. The Church, with them, is “spiritual Israel” and Jesus Christ is the absent King of the Church; and as the kingdom of God is within the Christian, there is no reason why Jesus Christ should come back to earth to be king on an earthly throne. They have decreed that He shall not. They claim that this is a reflection against them, to say that the return and presence of Christ the King is imperative to establish Christ’s kingdom on earth. Many of them are turning to what they call, “the social gospel.” They of course, do not believe Galatians 1:8 and 9.
In seeking to apply the Sermon on the Mount, many preachers do not understand that no man can practice the ethics of Jesus until he first receives, by the new birth, the nature of Jesus Christ. Some are preaching social regeneration, or political reform, instead of regeneration for the individual sinner, described in John 3:18: “He that believeth on Him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” Of course, when they take an inventory and admit that there are fourteen times as many unconverted heathen in the world today as the total population of the world when Christianity began, they know that their program and task require wholesale salvation; so they endeavor to Christianize society and governments. However, some sincere Christians among them are turning from the error of their way, from the false hopes of the Postmillenarians.
Because of the unscriptural mixture of God’s kingdom program with God’s purpose in this day of grace by Christian preachers, because they are not only ignorant of the blessed hope of Titus 2:13, but scoff at the true servants of the Lord who faithfully proclaim the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, first to receive His Church, and then His advent as the Son of man, the Prince of Peace, to bring a righteous and peaceful political government, there are thousands of unconverted statesmen, politicians, religious reformers, and all kinds of sinners who say that Christianity is a failure.
Christianity is certainly a failure according to the program of the Postmillenarians; but they are the real failure. They have seriously failed because they have presented a program that is not of God and opposed to the true program of God. God, during this age of grace, is building a House, called the Body of Christ, the One New Man. Ephesians 4:11 and 12. I Corinthians 12:13. Ephesians 2:15.
Note the purpose and goal of God: “And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying (building up) of the Body of Christ; Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect Man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11 to 13.
The end of the present Divine economy will not be the end of the world. After this age of grace, when the Lord’s Body has been completed, the great tribulation will follow, and then will appear the Son of man coming in the clouds with power and great glory. Concerning Christ in heaven God’s Word declares: “Whom the heavens must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.” Acts 3:21.
War is a horrible thing and every true American sincerely trusts that this nation may be saved from participation in this present conflict unless participation will save the nation from something worse than war. Every Christian preacher should be diligently proclaiming God’s saving message to lost sinners. They should be more interested in saving men from eternal perdition than in saving them from war. But pacifism on the part of Christians that interferes with the government’s preparations for defense against an “aggressor” nation is unscriptural.

Some Very important Facts For the Study of the Book of Acts and Its Relation to the Other Books of the Bible. - Pastor J. C. O’Hair

Monday, February 8th, 2010

If you are a child of God, it is of course because you have been saved by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ Who suffered for sins once, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.

The Christian is God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Ephesians 2:10. Christians are expected to be workmen, not ashamed, because they study the Word of God and rightly divide it. II Timothy 2:15, All true Bible Christians believe in the Divine inspiration of the Scriptures. And of course every intelligent student of the Bible knows that God gave spiritual instructions and religious programs to Israel, under the law, that were done away in Christ; and therefore they are not for the obedience and practice of members of Christ’s Body under “the dispensation of the grace of God”. Every intelligent student of the Scriptures knows that during this present reign of grace there is but one true Bible Church, and that Gentiles may enjoy God’s favor in a way never before known.
No intelligent student of the Bible will be foolish enough to say that all of the inspired instructions in the Bible are written to members of the Body of Christ for their obedience and practice. The risen Christ revealed to the apostle Paul His Divine Program for the Body; and therefore the sane and satisfactory principle for Bible study is for members of the Body of Christ to study all of the Divine instructions, given by God to His people in former dispensations, in the light of the specific revealed truth for this present dispensation, and bring nothing into God’s message and dispensation of grace that is not compatible with His “grace” truth given for this age.
Note carefully Acts 14:27:
“AND WHEN THEY WERE COME, AND HAD GATHERED THE CHURCH TOGETHER, THEY REHEARSED ALL THAT GOD HAD DONE WITH THEM, AND HOW HE HAD OPENED THE DOOR OF FAITH UNTO THE GENTILES.”
Who opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles? God. By whom, and when? By Paul, at the time of his first missionary journey, some ten or twelve years, after the death of` Jesus Christ. Let us not have the Gentile door opened before God opened it.
In this connection let us note carefully:
“THESE TWELVE JESUS SENT FORTH, AND COMMANDED THEM, SAYING, GO NOT INTO THE WAY OF THE GENTILES, AND INTO ANY CITY OF, THE SAMARITANS ENTER YE NOT; BUT GO RATHER TO THE LOST SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL. AND AS YE GO, PREACH, SAYING, THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND.” Matthew, 10:5 to 7.
“HE ANSWERED AND SAID, I AM NOT SENT BUT UNTO THE LOST SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL.” Matthew 15:24
“OF THIS MAN’S SEED HATH GOD ACCORDING TO HIS PROMISE RAISED UNTO ISRAEL A SAVIOUR, JESUS.” Acts 13:23.
“AND SAUL WAS CONSENTING UNTO HIS DEATH. AND AT THAT TIME THERE WAS A GREAT PERSECUTION AGAINST THE CHURCH WHICH WAS AT JERUSALEM; AND THEY WERE ALL SCATTERED ABROAD THROUGHOUT THE REGIONS OF JUDAEA AND SAMARIA, EXCEPT THE APOSTLES.” Acts 8:1.
“NOW THEY WHICH WERE SCATTERED ABROAD UPON THE PERSECUTION THAT AROSE ABOUT STEPHEN TRAVELLED AS FAR AS PHENICE, AND CYPRUS, AND ANTIOCH, PREACHING THE WORD TO NONE BUT UNTO THE JEWS ONLY.” Acts 11:19.
“AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, YE KNOW HOW THAT IT IS AN UNLAWFUL THING FOR A MAN THAT IS A JEW TO KEEP COMPANY, OR COME UNTO ONE OF ANOTHER NATION; BUT GOD HATH SHEWED ME THAT I SHOULD NOT CALL ANY MAN COMMON OR UNCLEAN. Acts 10:28.
NOW with these verses let us compare the testimonies of Paul in Acts 22:17 and 21—Romans 15:16—Ephesians 3:8—Ephesians 3:1 to 3.
“AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT, WHEN I WAS COME AGAIN TO JERUSALEM, EVEN WHILE I PRAYED IN THE TEMPLE, I WAS IN A TRANCE.”
“AND HE SAID UNTO ME, DEPART: FOR I WILL SEND TREE FAR HENCE UNTO THE GENTILES.”
“THAT I SHOULD BE THE MINISTER OF JESUS CHRIST TO THE GENTILES, MINISTERING THE GOSPEL OF GOD, THAT THE OFFERING UP OF THE GENTILES MIGHT BE ACCEPTABLE, BEING SANCTIFIED BY THE HOLY GHOST.”
“UNTO ME, WHO AM LESS THAN THE LEAST OF ALL SAINTS, IS THIS GRACE GIVEN, THAT I SHOULD PREACH AMONG THE GENTILES THE UNSEARCHABLE RICHES OF CHRIST.”
“FOR THIS CAUSE I PAUL, THE PRISONER OF JESUS CHRIST FOR YOU GENTILES, IF YE HAVE HEARD OF THE DISPENSATION OF THE GRACE OF GOD WHICH IS GIVEN ME TO YOU-WARD: HOW THAT BY REVELATION HE MADE KNOWN UNTO ME THE MYSTERY; AS I WROTE AFORE IN FEW WORDS.”
The twelve apostles remained in Jerusalem. Christ sent them to Jews not only while He was on earth, but years later. Note carefully Galatians 2:7 to 9
“BUT CONTRARIWISE, WHEN THEY SAW THAT THE GOSPEL OF THE UNCIRCUMCISION WAS COMMITTED UNTO ME, AS THE GOSPEL OF THE CIRCUMCISION WAS UNTO PETER; (FOR HE THAT WROUGHT EFFECTUALLY IN PETER TO THE APOSTLESHIP OF THE CIRCUMCISION, THE SAME WAS MIGHTY IN ME TOWARD THE GENTILES;) AND WHEN JAMES, PETER AND JOHN, WHO SEEMED TO BE PILLARS, PERCEIVED THE GRACE THAT WAS GIVEN UNTO ME; THEY GAVE TO ME AND BARNABAS THE RIGHT HANDS OF FELLOWSHIP; THAT WE SHOULD GO UNTO THE HEATHEN, AND THEY UNTO THE CIRCUMCISION.”
The Jews converted to Christ in Jerusalem preached to Jews only. They did as Christ on earth did. Matthew 15:24. Paul was sent into Gentile countries to preach to Gentiles.
We present several references and would suggest that you carefully read these verses in your Bible as your key to the understanding of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Romans 15:8—Acts 2:22—Acts 13:23—John 1:11—Matthew 15:24—Galatians 4:4 and 5—Matthew 5:17—Matthew 23:1 to 3—John 4:22—Luke 4:16—John 1:31—Acts 5:29 to 32.
We also present several references for the study of God’s truth for members of Christ’s Body. Ephesians 3:1 to 11—Colossians 1:23 to 28—II Corinthians 5:16 to 21—Romans 11:11 to 15—II Timothy 1:9 to 11—I Timothy 1:4 to 8.

NOW FOR SOME IMPORTANT FACTS

NUMBER ONE

In Romans 11:13 we read the words of the apostle Paul: “For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office.” We emphasize “THE apostle of the Gentiles,” Note the same testimony of Paul in I Timothy 2:7, II Timothy 1:11, Ephesians 3:1 to 3, II Timothy 4:17. Note what the Lord Jesus Christ commanded Paul in Acts 22:21: “And He said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.” Note what Paul and Peter agreed about fifteen years after Christ died: “And when James, Peter and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship, that we should go to the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.” Compare Romans 11:1 with Matthew 10:5 to 7.

NUMBER TWO

Note carefully when and why God sent salvation to the Gentiles by THE APOSTLE to the Gentiles: “I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.” Romans 11:11. “For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief.” Romans 11:30. “For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be but life from the dead?” Romans 11:15. Here we learn the all important truth that when and because of the fall, the blindness, the unbelief, and the casting-away of the nation Israel, God sent salvation, the message of reconciliation, to the Gentiles by the apostle to the Gentiles. One of the most important truths to know if we desire to understand the Bible, is when the nation Israel was set aside.

NUMBER THREE

It behooves all Christians who desire to rightly divide the Word of Truth to learn from diligently and prayerfully studying the Bible, when God cast Israel away and sent reconciliation to, the Gentiles. Romans 11:15 is one of the most important statements in the Bible to enable the student of the Scriptures to mark God’s dispensational change. Note carefully this statement, written about 25 years after Christ died on the cross: “For if the casting away of them (Israel) be the reconciling of the world, (the Gentiles), what shall the receiving of them, be but life from the dead?” Romans 11:15. If you will carefully read Acts 3:26—Acts 5:29 to 32—Acts 10:28—Acts 11:19—Acts 13:46 and Acts 18:5 and 6, you will learn that the nation Israel had not been cast away when these messages were proclaimed. Read Acts 23:1 to 6 and tell why Paul called the Jerusalem high priest God’s servant.

NUMBER FOUR

Read carefully Romans 1:18 to 32 with Genesis, chapters 11 to 25. We learn that more than nineteen centuries before Christ came, God cast away the Gentiles, When God, at that time, cast away the Gentiles He created Israel for His own glory: “This people have I formed for Myself; they shall shew forth My praise.” “Ye are My witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen.” “I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.” “Verily Thou art a God that hidest Thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.” “Even every one that is called by My name for I have created him for My glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him,.” Isaiah 43:21, 10 and 15, and Isaiah 45:15 and Isaiah 43:7, When God cast away the Gentiles He created Israel. When God cast away Israel, some years after the death and resurrection of their Messiah, that glorified Messiah sent Paul to the Gentiles: “For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, if ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation He made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words).” When God cast away Israel the dispensation of the mystery was made known. Ephesians 3:9.

NUMBER FIVE

Compare Luke 21:24, Romans 11:25 and 26 and Ephesians 4:13. We quote: “And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, UNTIL THE TIMES OF THE GENTILES” BE FULFILLED.” Luke 21:24. “For I would not brethren that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, UNTIL THE FULNESS OF THE GENTILES BE COME IN. And so all Israel shall be saved; as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.” Romans 11:25 and 26. “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and in the knowledge of the Son of God, UNTO A PERFECT MAN, UNTO THE MEASURE OF THE STATURE OF THE FULNESS OF CHRIST.” Ephesians 4:13. God in times past dealt with the nation Israel very definitely. God in the future will deal very definitely with the nation Israel. But not until “the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled, till the fulness of the Gentiles be come in, till members of the Body of Christ come in the unity of the faith, and in the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a Perfect Man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:13. God’s purpose and present program is Ephesians 4:12 and 13.

NUMBER SIX

Let us note the seeming contradiction in Romans 11:2 and Romans 11:15 and 25: “God HATH NOT CAST AWAY His people which He foreknew.” “For if THE CASTING AWAY of them (God’s people) be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be but life from the dead?” “For I would not brethren that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in,” This is explained by the two-fold ELECTION in Romans 11:5 to 7 and Romans 11:26 and 28: “Even so then, at this present time also there is a remnant according to the ELECTION of grace. And if by grace then it is no more of works; otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for, but the ELECTION hath obtained it, and the rest were” blinded.” “And so all Israel shall be saved as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.” “As concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching THE ELECTION, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.” When Paul was sent with reconciliation to Gentiles there was a remnant of Israel according to the ELECTION of grace. The rest were blinded and cast away, But all Israel will be saved. That ELECTION will be for Abraham’s, Isaac’s and Jacob’s sake (the fathers),
Note in Acts 5:29 to 32 that Israel had not been cast away when Peter preached to them.

NUMBER SEVEN

We read in John 1:11: “He came unto His own and His own received Him not.” Here we learn that Christ came unto Israel, the Jews, and they received Him not. And yet we learn in John 2:23, John 7:31, John 8:30, John 11:45, John 12:11, Acts 2:4, Acts 4:4, Acts 4:32, Acts 5:14, Acts 6:1 and Acts 11:21 that very many Jews did receive Christ. How should we explain this seeming contradiction? God was carrying on a two-fold program while Christ was in the midst of Israel and when the Twelve confirmed that ministry after Christ’s death (Hebrews 2:2 to 5), salvation was offered to individual Jews and the Messianic kingdom was presented to the rulers of Israel.

NUMBER EIGHT

Note carefully Luke 19:42 and 44, Matthew 11:14 and Matthew 21:43:
“Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes,” “And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because THOU KNEWEST NOT THE TIME OF THY VISITATION.” “And if ye will receive it, this is Elijah which was for to come.” “Therefore I say unto you The Kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.” Carefully note what Christ said to Israel in Luke 19:42.—Read it again—thy day”—“thy peace.” Christ’s presence in the midst of Israel was their day, their kingdom, if they had received the King.

NUMBER NINE

Just what did the Holy Spirit mean in His message by the mouth of Peter in Acts 3:19 to 21? “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. And He shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.” Note also Acts 3:24: “Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.” “These days” refers to Israel’s kingdom days, or millennium. If Israel had repented, the Lord Jesus was ready to return as their Messiah and King. So the kingdom was just as definitely presented to Israel in incarnation and in resurrection before the Body of Christ had its historic beginning.

NUMBER TEN

All intelligent Christians are agreed that the Bible clearly and definitely teaches that the Old Testament, or the Old Covenant, was done away in Christ. II Corinthians 3:14—Hebrews 8:13—Colossians 2:14—Galatians 3:19—Ephesians 2:14 and 15.

NUMBER ELEVEN

All intelligent Christians are agreed that when the law was given by Moses, Moses was 80 years old (Exodus 7:7) and with Moses, as mediator, at that same time God entered with Israel into, that Covenant, or Testament, which became “Old” after Christ died on the cross. Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the law about 2500 years after Adam was exiled from the Garden of Eden. Therefore, from Adam to Moses, no Israelite, Jew or Gentile was an Old Testament character. Romans 5:12 to 14; Galatians 3:19.

NUMBER TWELVE

Inasmuch as the giving of the law is recorded in the twentieth chapter of Exodus and in Jeremiah 31:32 we learn that God entered into the (Old) Covenant with Israel when Israel left Egypt, there is not one line of the Old Testament Scriptures in the Book of Genesis. It is therefore unscriptural to call Adam, Abel, Seth, Enoch, Noah, Shem, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, Levi, or any of their contemporaries, “Old Testament characters.”

NUMBER THIRTEEN

“Abram” became “Abraham” when he was 99 years old. Genesis 17:5. At that same time God established the covenant of circumcision. Acts 7:8—Genesis 17:24 and Genesis 17:14. Abram was called when he was 75 years old. Genesis 12:4. Abram was declared righteous in uncircumcision years before he was circumcised. Romans 4:8 to 11; Genesis 15:6. Abram’s father (Terah) was an idol worshipper. Joshua 24:2. Abram was not an Israelite. Abram was not a Jew. Abram was not an Old Testament character. Abram had no sabbath to keep. Abram was not under the law. Galatians 3:16 to 19. Abram was declared righteous 430 years before the law was added. Galatians 3:17.

NUMBER FOURTEEN

About 1980 years after Abram was declared righteous in uncircumcision, Paul declared that Christ, by revelation, committed to him “the gospel of uncircumcision.” Galatians 2:7—Galatians 1:11 and 12. Note carefully what Paul said in this connection: “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached, BEFORE the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.” Galatians 3:8. Let us get clearly fixed in our minds that the Scripture foresaw Paul’s “uncircumcision” gospel for uncircumcised heathen when God, declared uncircumcised Abram righteous some years before God instituted circumcision and established the covenant of circumcision.

NUMBER FIFTEEN

Melchisedek met Abram when Abram was an uncircumcised Gentile. Genesis 14:18 and 19. But Isaac was not born until uncircumcised Abram became circumcised Abraham. Isaac, Abraham’s son, was circumcised when he was eight days old. Genesis 21:4. Note now Matthew 1:1—Luke 2:21—Romans 15:8: “The Book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the son of Abraham.” “And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before He was conceived in the womb.” “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers.” Jesus Christ and Peter were ministers of the circumcision. Romans 15:8—Galatians 2:7 to 9.

NUMBER SIXTEEN

Every member of Christ’s Body has been circumcised: “In Whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ,” Colossians 2:11. “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” Philippians 3:3.

NUMBER SEVENTEEN

Note Galatians 5:2 and Galatians 6:15: “Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised Christ shall profit you nothing.” “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor, uncircumcision, but a new creature.” Compare these statements with Genesis 17:1 to 15 and note that in one dispensation circumcision was demanded for fellowship while in another it was condemned and forbidden. Thus we see the importance of “dispensational” Bible Study.

NUMBER EIGHTEEN

Note carefully Galatians 3:19 and Hebrews 9:10: “Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.” Galatians 3:19. “Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.” Hebrews 9:10. Here we note that the law (the Old Testament) was added to the Abrahamic promise (to the gospel of Galatians 3:8) till Christ, Abraham’s Seed, came. And we learn that the Jews’ religion was added until the time of reformation. It is so very important that we find in the Bible when the time of reformation came. With the fall of Israel, years after Christ’s death God ended His religious program.

NUMBER NINETEEN

We have quoted Romans 15:8: “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers.” With this statement let us prayerfully and carefully compare Acts 13:23: “Of this man’s (David’s) seed hath God according to His promise raised unto ISRAEL a Saviour, Jesus.” Acts 2:22: “Ye men of ISRAEL, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles, and wonders, and signs, which God did by Him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know.” Matthew 15:24: “But He answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of ISRAEL.” Acts 5:30 and 31: “The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, Whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.”
Unless and until we accept these statements at full face value and understand them we can never expect to understand Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and the first half of the Book of Acts. Read this significant statement of Christ in Matthew 23:1 and 2: “Then spake Jesus to the multitude and to His disciples, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.” He told his apostles to recognize Moses’ seat.

NUMBER TWENTY

Gentiles obtained mercy when and because of Israel’s unbelief. Romans 11:30. Salvation was sent to Gentiles when and because of Israel’s fall. Romans 11:11. The message of reconciliation was sent to Gentiles when and because Israel was cast away. Romans 11:15. Therefore we must know when Israel was cast away, if we are to know when this present age and the joint Body of Ephesians 3:6 began.

NUMBER TWENTY-ONE

Let us carefully note these statements in the Book of Acts and messages to and concerning Israel:
“Unto you FIRST God, having raised up His Son Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities,” Acts 3:26.
“Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, Whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance TO ISRAEL, and forgiveness of sins.” Acts 5:29 to 31.
“And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.” Acts 10:28.
“Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the Word to none but unto the JEWS ONLY.” Acts 11:19.
“Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the Word of God should FIRST have been spoken to you; but seeing ye put it from you., and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.” Acts 13:46.
Here we learn, concerning the ministry of Peter, that in the first nine chapters of Acts God’s message and program were for Jews and not for Gentiles. Here we learn why and when Paul turned to the Gentiles with the Word of God, when and because Israel put it from them.

NUMBER TWENTY-TWO

Note in Acts 8:1 that the twelve apostles remained in Jerusalem. Note that they were still there some years later. Acts 15:2—Galatians 2:1 to 9. Note what the Lord Jesus told Paul—“And I saw Him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning Me.” “And He said unto me, Depart; for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.” Acts 22:18 and 21. So we see that Peter and his associates remained in Jerusalem, and Paul left Jerusalem. Note carefully Galatians 2:7 to 9.

NUMBER TWENTY-THREE

Carefully note the result of Paul’s visit to Jerusalem where he was directed by revelation. “But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me; God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me: But contrariwise, when they saw, that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; (For He that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in, me toward the Gentiles;). And when James, Peter, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship: that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.” Galatians 2:6 to 9. Here we learn two most important facts, that Peter and his associates agreed to go to the Jews, and that different gospel programs were committed to Peter and Paul.

NUMBER TWENTY-FOUR

Now let us compare Mark 16:14 and 15 with Colossians 1:5, 6 and 23. “Afterward He appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen Him after He was risen. And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
“For the hope which is laid up, for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the Word of the truth of the gospel; Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew, the grace of God in truth.” “If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister.” If the Lord Jesus instructed the Twelve to preach the gospel to every creature under heaven, why did they remain at Jerusalem and why did they agree with Paul to go to, the Jews and delegate to him the responsibility of preaching to the Gentiles? Concerning preaching to every creature Paul said, “whereof I Paul am made a minister.”’ Note also II Timothy 4:17: “Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.”

NUMBER TWENTY-FIVE

Note carefully Luke 21:20, Matthew 23:38 and Matthew 22:7: “And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.” “Behold your house is left unto you desolate.” “But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth; and he sent forth his armies; and destroyed those murderers, and burned up, their city.” Israel’s desolation was to take place when the Lord’s army surrounded Jerusalem. Did this happen during the years covered by the Book of Acts? Did not Jerusalem and Israel’s temple stand all during the “Acts” period? By reading the Book of Acts (especially chapters 22 and 28) do we not learn that Israel’s religious officers were well protected by Rome during the “Acts” period?

NUMBER TWENTY-SIX

Note “Acts 20:16 and Acts 23:4 and 5: “For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia; for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.” “And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God’s high priest? Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest; for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.” Here we learn that more than twenty years after Christ died on the cross Israel was still keeping Pentecost at Jerusalem. Here we learn that even later Paul apologized to Israel’s high priest who still ruled over Israel and their temple. Could there be a Pentecost without Jerusalem and the Jerusalem temple?

NUMBER TWENTY-SEVEN

Now see if we can reconcile Christ’s message of Matthew 23:31 to 33 and 38 with Peter’s message of Acts 3:17 and Acts 3:25 and 26.
“Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. Ye serpents, ye generation of’ vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” “Behold your house is left unto you desolate.”
“And now brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.” “Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you FIRST God, having raised up His Son Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.” Does it not seem strange that the murderers were denounced as “serpents” before they killed the Prince of Life (Acts 3:15) and were tenderly addressed as “children” after they committed that awful crime? Think carefully before answering this question, “why did the Lord send Peter to say to Israel, “UNTO YOU FIRST” after he had said “you generation of vipers, your, house is left unto you desolate”? Never lose the significance and efficacy of Christ’s prayer on the cross—“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” That prayer of Christ gave Israel another chance to receive Jesus of Nazareth as Messiah and King; the opportunity to commit the unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit after they had committed the pardonable sin against the Son of man. Matthew 12:31 and 32.

NUMBER TWENTY-EIGHT

When the resurrected Christ gave the so-called great commission of Matthew 28:19 and 20 and Mark 16:14 to 18 there were eleven apostles (Judas was dead). How many apostles stood up on the day of Pentecost? Twelve. Peter with the eleven. Acts 2:14. There were twelve Jews. Note what Jesus of Nazareth had promised them: “Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that ye which have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of His glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.” Matthew 19:28. Note Acts 2:36—Acts 2:5 and Acts 2:22. Thus we see the twelve apostles, who are yet to sit on twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel, addressing the twelve tribes of Israel on an Israelitish religious feast day. There was nothing of the dispensation of the grace of God for Gentiles on that day. Note Ephesians 3:1 to 3—“For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to youward: How that by revelation He made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words.)”

NUMBER TWENTY-NINE

Note carefully Peter’s statement of Acts 10:28 and the attitude of the other eleven apostles toward Peter when he preached to Cornelius some seven or eight years after his message to Israel on the day of Pentecost. We quote Acts 10:28 and Acts 11:1 to 3. “And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.” Acts 10:28.
“And the apostles and brethren that were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the Word of God. And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision, contended with him, Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.” Acts 11:1 to 3. Note what kind of a Gentile Cornelius was. “A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.” “And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of a good report among all the nations of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.” Acts 10:2 and 22. Now see if you can find any record in the Book of Acts that any of the twelve apostles preached the gospel outside of the land of the Jews. In this connection note carefully Christ’s words to the Twelve, in Matthew 10:23; “Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.”

NUMBER THIRTY

In the Book of Acts we find headings by the publishers:
“Paul’s First Missionary Journey.”
“Paul’s Second Missionary Journey.”
“Paul’s Third Missionary Journey.”
Why do we not find any headings of Peter’s first, second or third missionary journeys? The apostles remained in Jerusalem. Acts 8:1. Aside from Peter’s message to the household of Cornelius, the Gentile; who loved the Jews, is there a single record in Acts that any of the Twelve preached to any Gentile? Not according to man’s church history, but according to the Holy Spirit’s Acts?

NUMBER THIRTY-ONE

In the light of Acts 11:19 and Acts 10:28 and Acts 11:1 to 3, we should know that the eunuch to whom Philip preached in the eighth chapter of Acts was not an uncircumcised heathen. He had been worshipping in Jerusalem. Several years after Philip preached to the eunuch it was unlawful for a Jew to preach to an uncircumcised Gentile, Acts 10:28. Several years later Peter said to the other apostles “God made choice among us that the Gentiles (the household of Cornelius—Acts 10:34) by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel and believe.” Acts 15:7.

NUMBER THIRTY-TWO

Note carefully Luke 19:9 and Luke 13:16. “And Jesus said unto him: This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.” “And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?” Then note Hebrews 2:16 and 17—“For verily He took not on Him the nature of angels but He took on Him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.” Then Luke 7:2 to 5—“And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto Him the elders of the Jews, beseeching Him that He would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought Him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom He should do this; For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.” Jesus of Nazareth, the minister of the circumcision, became the seed of Abraham to save Israel. He ministered to the sons and daughters of Abraham. In Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we find no record of any Gentile man to whom Christ, on earth, ministered except the Roman centurion of Luke 7 and Matthew 8. This Gentile approached Israel’s Messiah through the sons of Abraham who went to Jesus for him because he loved them and had built them a synagogue.

NUMBER THIRTY-THREE

Note carefully the record concerning John the Baptist. “And I knew Him (Christ) not; but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am, I come baptizing with water.” John 1:31. “And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.” Luke 1:16. “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel.” Luke 1:80: “When John had first preached before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” Acts 13:24: “Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on Him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” Acts 19:4. Thus we learn the important truth that John’s message and baptism were for Israel.

NUMBER THIRTY-FOUR

Compare the message of John the Baptist for Israel, in Luke 3:3 and 16 with the message of Peter and the Eleven for Israel in Acts 2:36 to 38. “And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.” “John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose; He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.” “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” The same kingdom message for the same kingdom nation. Compare both messages with Paul’s statement in I Corinthians 1:17 and Ephesians 4:4 and 5. “Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel.” “There is one Body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”

NUMBER THIRTY-FIVE

Jesus Christ on earth ministered to a Gentile woman of great faith and to a Gentile man of great faith: “Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.” Matthew 15:28. “When Jesus heard it, He marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.” Matthew 8:10. Note Christ’s words to the woman and to the man: “But Jesus said unto her, LET THE CHILDREN FIRST BE FILLED: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread and to cast it unto the dogs.” Mark 7:27. “BUT THE CHILDREN OF THE KINGDOM SHALL BE CAST OUT INTO OUTER DARKNESS: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 8:12. The Jews were the children. In the Book of Acts the Jews were first being filled and then they were cast out. Read Acts 3:26—Acts 11:19—Acts 13:45 and 46—Acts 18:5 and 6—I Thessalonians 2:14 to 16—and Acts 28:25 to 28.

NUMBER THIRTY-SIX

Note carefully these verses from Stephen’s messages to the rulers of Israel: “But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.” Acts 7:55 and 56. “Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye.” Acts 7:51. “And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Acts 7:59. Now carefully compare these statements with Christ’s words in Matthew 12:31 and 32, concerning Israel’s pardonable and unpardonable sin. Israel sinned against the Son of man, in fulfillment of prophecy and according to the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. Matthew 26:24—Acts 2:22 and 23—Acts 3:18—Acts 4:27—Acts 13:29 and 30. Christ on the cross prayed that Israel should be forgiven for their sin against the Son of man. Stephen saw the Son of man standing ready to come back to Israel. But Israel committed the unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit. Read Acts 5:30 to 33—Acts 7:51—Acts 13:45 and 46—Acts 18:5 and 6.

NUMBER THIRTY-SEVEN

It is most significant to note that the apostle Paul wrote about one-half of the books of the New Testament Scriptures, and in his messages he did not refer in detail to any of the kingdom teaching or kingdom parables of Jesus Christ on earth. He made no reference to the Sermon on the Mount or the “Our Father” prayer. To the contrary, Paul wrote in II Corinthians 5:16—“Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh; yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we Him no more.” This statement marks an important and radical change in God’s spiritual program. With this verse we quote Galatians 1:11 and 12: “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Compare Romans 15:16 with Romans 15:8 and learn the difference between Christ’s gospel program on earth and His later program through Paul.

NUMBER THIRTY-EIGHT

Note what was committed to Paul: “A dispensation is committed unto me.” I Corinthians 9:17. “But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter. Galatians 2:7. “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24. “And all things are of God, Who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation, To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. “II Corinthians 5:18 and 19. “Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.” Ephesians 3:8. “For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, It ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to youward: How that by revelation He made known to me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words).” Ephesians 3:1 to 3. “If ye continue in the faith, grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of. Christ in my flesh for His Body’s sake, which is the Church Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God, which is given to me for you, to fulfill the Word of God.” Colossians 1:23 to 25.

NUMBER THIRTY-NINE

Carefully compare Acts 15:13 and 14 with Galatians 2:8 and 9: “And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His name.”
“For He that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles; And when James, Peter and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.”
If Peter and James declared, in Acts 15:13, that God’s purpose, during this present dispensation of grace, is to visit the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name, why did these men agree to go to the Jews? How could Jews be saved and thus form with Gentiles a Joint Body if only Gentiles were to be visited? Ephesians 3:6.
If the Gentile outgathering of Acts 15:13 and 14 was in fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies and the Joint Body of Ephesians 3:6 was not, surely they must refer to two different Divine programs. Any prophesied church in the Bible is different from the Church of the mystery.

NUMBER FORTY

One of the most important Scriptures is Ephesians 3:1 to 3: “For this cause I, Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward How that by revelation He made known unto me the mystery; as I wrote afore in few, words.” The dispensation and message of grace for Gentiles was revealed to Paul by the Lord Jesus Christ. It is so important that the student of the Scriptures knows that “the dispensation of grace” began with Paul, and not with Peter; that it began after the risen Christ revealed the mystery to Paul. We can never rightly divide the Word of Truth if we begin “the dispensation of grace” with Peter and Pentecost.

NUMBER FORTY-ONE

It is interesting to note that “reconciliation” is first mentioned with Adam in the Book of Romans. The word “atonement”, in Romans 5:11, should be translated “reconciliation”. Then note the “wherefore” in the next verse: “Wherefore, as by one man (Adam).” “Adam” is mentioned with the setting aside of Israel. “Reconciliation” came with the setting aside of Israel. Romans 11:15. Now check up on this. With the setting aside of God’s religious nation, religion and signs waned and passed away. So after “Adam” and “reconciliation” appear together in the New Testament Scriptures, there is no record that any Jew or Gentile received water baptism.

NUMBER FORTY-TWO

Carefully consider Colossians 1:24 to 26: “Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for His Body’s sake, which is the Church: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God, which is given to me for you, to fulfill the Word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages’ and from generations, but now is made manifest to His saints.” Meditate upon these statements of Paul. He filled up two things, “that which was behind of the afflictions of Christ” and “the Word of God with the mystery.” The mystery was revealed to Paul to complete the Word of God.

NUMBER FORTY-THREE

Read carefully Ephesians 6:19 and 20—Colossians 4:3 and 4 and Ephesians 3:9. “And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” “Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds. That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.” “And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, Who created all things by Jesus Christ.” Why was Paul in the Roman jail? What does God want Christians to do concerning “the dispensation of the mystery”? What are you doing about it?

Bible Messages for Bereans By J.C. O’Hair

Monday, February 1st, 2010

NOTE: The following preface and article are taken from an original copy of the very first edition of Pastor O’Hair’s “Bible Study for Bereans” magazine published in August 1935.  We hope you enjoy this excerpt from deep within the Grace archives.

We are sending forth this first edition of Bible Study for Bereans with the purpose, desire and hope that we may stimulate, encourage, or provoke, real honest, diligent Bible study among the children of God.  The profound ignorance of the Bible among church members is appalling.

We earnestly solicit and covet the prayerful cooperation of every spiritual child of God who appreciates God’s Grace Gospel and who really desires to receive and search the Holy Scriptures without the fear or favor of man or religious organizations.  It is needless and useless to appeal to believers for whom denominational loyalty and pride, or preconceived opinions, interfere with honest, intelligent and unprejudiced study of the Word of God.  So our Bible study is for Bereans.

It has been repeatedly claimed that more than ninety-five percent of church members permit church leaders to do their thinking for them, and that ninety-five percent of their instructors have been so influenced by the traditions of church fathers and by denominational church creeds that fewer than five percent of either leaders or followers are willing, if able, to study the Bible with unbiased minds and with open and honest hearts.

Let us ever bear in mind that no servant of the Lord has any new truth to present.  Progressive revelation ceased with the close of The Revelation more than 1800 years ago.  Since that time, “anything that is true is not new” and “anything that is new is not true”, so far as the inspired Word of God is concerned.

No believer, or group of believers, receives any special revelation of Divine truth, or interpretation of truth, as did the holy men of old who were moved by the Holy Spirit to give to us the Holy Scriptures.  The humblest, most ignorant member of the Body of Christ, the new-born babe in Christ, has just as much of the Holy Spirit as has the most gifted Bible teacher.  Men are not led into truth by the Holy Spirit independent of the written Word of God.  And most assuredly the millions of church members, who are in doctrinal error, have not been led by the Holy Spirit into the misinterpretation of the Scriptures.

Human systems of interpretation leave us with inconsistencies and seeming contradictions in the Bible, with unholy mixtures which are displeasing to the Lord.  “All Scripture…is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness.”  But all Scripture must be rightly divided for the true interpretation, appropriation and application.

A Simple Principle in Bible Study

We are told in I Peter 1:10 that Israel’s prophets foretold the sufferings and glory of Christ.  In Ephesians 3:9 we are told that the “dispensation of the mystery” and the “unsearchable riches of Christ” were hid in God and not made known to Israel’s prophets.  All through the book of Acts and through the Epistles of Peter, Paul, James and John we must differentiate between that which Israel’s prophets foretold would come to pass and that which none of them even hinted would come to pass: “not made known to the sons of men in other ages”; “hidden from generations” (Colossians 1:25 and 26; Ephesians 3:3 to 5).

If there has been no change in God’s program since the Epistles were written to the Ephesians and Colossians, then this is still the Dispensation of the Mystery which means the Dispensation of that which had been a Mystery until it was revealed by the glorified Christ to and through His Apostle Paul.  For the students of the Word of God, for the members of the Church which is the Body of Christ, there should be nothing mysterious, mystical or hidden concerning the dispensation of Grace and the mutual inheritance of the Head and members of the Body, made alive together, seated together in the highest heavenlies, constituting the One New Man which God is now making, while His program and purpose concerning Israel have been temporarily abandoned (Ephesians 1:9 to 22; Ephesians 2:4 to 17).  Aside from the Divine preservation of Israel in the world today, God has suspended His covenants and promises with Israel and the other nations, until He shall have accomplished that which He purposed in Christ Jesus ages before He made any covenants concerning His Nation and their land of promise (II Timothy 1:9; Ephesians 3:11).

Israel’s hope is identified with the sufferings and glory of Christ foretold by Israel’s prophets.  That hope will be realized when Christ shall be the Son of man on the throne of His glory (Matthew 25:31).  There the twelve apostles will be seated with Him (Matthew 19:28).  The Son of man is coming in power and great glory (Luke 21:27 to 31).  He will bring about the restitution of all things (Acts 3:21).  Moses, Samuel, and all of the prophets, spoke of “these days” (Acts 3:24).  “These days” were promised in the covenants (Acts 3:25).  At that time Christ will govern from David’s throne (Isaiah 9:6 and 7).

“These days” of grace, “these days” of the Body of Christ, are not the “these days” of Israel’s hope, foretold by Moses, Samuel and others.  “These days” were foreordained before the foundation of the world, but not foretold by Israel’s prophets.

None of the twelve apostles, in their “Acts” ministry, spoke of these days. They referred to a hope and blessings promised by the pen of David, Joel, Amos, Moses, Samuel, and others.  Let us be careful not to confuse prophetic promises with the mystery.  Let us not confuse the hope of the Body of Christ with Israel’s hope.

SPIRITISM CAN WE TALK WITH THE DEAD - Pastor J. C. O’Hair

Friday, January 8th, 2010

I am to speak to you in this service on the subject of “Spiritism”; that is, on the teachings and practices of Spiritists. You will notice that I did not say “Spiritualists.”A spiritual man is one who is indwelt and controlled by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth who has been sent down from heaven. No man can be spiritual who denies the record that God has given in the Bible concerning His only begotten and well-beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

The spiritual man is instructed in the Word of God to try the spirits. He believes that all Scripture Is God-breathed; therefore, his first question is, “what saith the Scriptures?”
There are Spiritists who are indwelt by the spirit of the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. According to the Word of God, the prince of the power of the air, who is also called the prince of this world and the god of this age, is Beelzebub, the prince of the demons. He is also known as Satan, and the Devil, the accuser of the brethren. He is the Christian’s adversary, and like a roaring lion he walks about seeking whom he may devour. The Christian is told to resist him steadfast in the faith. This supernatural one, who is spoken of as the ruler of world darkness in the heavenlies, is accused by God of the crime of deceiving the whole world. Demons and evil spirits are under his authority and direction.
The true spiritual man is uncompromisingly and unceasingly against any and all religions that deny the inspiration and absolute authority of the holy Scriptures, which we call the Bible. This Bible condemns Spiritism.
Spiritism was flourishing on this earth four thousand years ago. The Word of God was against it then just the same as it is at this present time. Ancient Spiritism did not pretend to advocate the worship of the God of the Bible. Modern Spiritism does not worship the true God; but it does claim this. And not only so, but it desires to be classified as a Christian religion.
The true Christian religion will stand the test of the Bible; that is, the entire Word of God fully endorses orthodox Christianity, and supports every claim and doctrine of orthodox Christianity.
The spiritual man knows full well that the New Testament Scriptures prophesy that Satan transformed into an angel of light sends forth his messengers, disguised as Christian ministers, trying to deceive religious people and entice them through the preaching of another Jesus and another gospel into his apostate Christianity.
God has prophesied that many shall follow the pernicious ways of Satan’s servants, who have gone in the way of Cain and Korah and Balaam, denying the Lord that bought them. These servants are spoken of as blind leaders of the blind, as false prophets, wolves in sheep’s clothing, deceiving if possible the very elect.
God has likewise foretold that in the latter days many shall depart from the faith and give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons.
He was not prophesying concerning the heathen world. He was speaking concerning the great apostasy in Christendom. Surely this great apostasy is now sweeping over Christendom with alarming rapidity, and many are being given over to that strong delusion prophesied in the Word of God, that they should believe the lie and be judged.
We further call your attention to this declaration of God; “I fear lest as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty so your minds shall be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.”
If Satan through his subtilty could beguile that first innocent pair in the garden of Eden; to be sure he can deceive man in his present fallen state.
God would not have us ignorant of Satan’s devices; but He would have us to put on that spiritual armour that He has provided for His spiritual children that they might stand against the wiles of the Devil. Satan is more than clever. He is ubiquitous, powerful, supernatural. He is directly or indirectly responsible for sin and sickness and sorrow and death, and he achieves much by his counterfeit religion, and plays havoc with the church by means of Christianized agnosticism.
Now we claim that Spiritists have been seduced by evil spirits, that the teachings of modern Spiritism, like the teachings of ancient Spiritism, is really the doctrine of demons. We furthermore claim that Spiritism is one of the strong delusions of Satan.
We do not propose to prove our charges by our statements against the statements of the conscientious and sincere Spiritists. But our constant and sole appeal shall be to the holy Scriptures which are given by inspiration of God and are profitable for doctrine and correction, which Scriptures modern Spiritualist claim as their text-book.
We would not, for one moment, say that there are not some excellent, brilliant and very religious men and women in this Satanic cult. However, the Bible is the Christian’s text book and the true Christian is against every religious movement that the Bible condemns. Now does the Bible condemn modern Spiritism?
We might speak of it as Christianized Spiritism, because Jesus Christ has been brought into this movement by many of the leaders of today.
Now, before we throw on the searchlight of God’s holy Word, let us briefly state what Spiritism teaches.
1. Consciousness after death.
2. It is possible for the living to communicate with the dead.
3. That we are surrounded by other intelligences in the unseen world.
4. God is impersonal but is responsible for the creation and the elements of the universe.
5. Man never had a fall. Whatever is, is right. Evil cannot exist. No matter what man’s path may be, good or bad, it is the path of divine ordination and destiny.
6. In the spirit world souls do wrong as they did here. They reap what they sow, but are gradually purified and blessed. And man is made better in this life by intercourse with spirits.
7. There is no atoning value in the death of Jesus Christ. He was a religious enthusiast, a Jew who came to an untimely death. He was, however, a medium of high order. But the teaching of spirits supersedes and is an advance upon the teachings of Christianity. Jesus Christ was not God, but He is now an advanced spirit in the sixth sphere.
8. Hell does not exist and never will. There is no judgment after death. Neither is there any such thing as bodily resurrection.
It is almost inconceivable that any person belonging to a religious organization teaching such doctrines should have any desire to be called a disciple of Jesus Christ; or would permit such a religious movement to be called a Christian religion. But remember the clever Devil.
There has always been the cry for religious tolerance and we are conscious of the fact that the constitution of this great country grants to each and every one the perfect right to religious liberty. But remember that our statement is, the Bible condemns the religion known as Spiritism.
First we quote from Deuteronomy 18:10 through 12.
“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
You will notice here in the eleventh verse the word “necromancer” which means “making request of the dead.” Associated with necromancers, in their abominations were the consulters with familiar spirits. Any one who knows of the demonism of heathen Africa knows that these abominations are still being practiced. A necromancer was a spirit medium. God’s wrath and judgment were against these evil practices which He calls abominations. Now surely, no Christian will want to endorse something that is an abomination in the sight of the Holy God.
“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God” Leviticus 19:31.
“And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people”. Leviticus 20:6.
“And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof; and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards”. Isaiah 19:3.
“And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust”. Isaiah 29:4.
“And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards; he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger”. II Kings 21:6.
Now we will especially call your attention to Isaiah 8:19 through 22. “Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and that mutter: Should not a people seek unto their God; for the living to the dead?”
Some of the modern Spiritist leaders hold seances in the light, but most of the mediums who seek information of the dead, keep on in the dark.
In the twentieth verse, the Lord gives to the Christian the test.
“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
Jesus Christ is the light of the world, and when He left He said to the Christians, “Ye are the light of the world,” “shining lights in the midst of a wicked and a perverse generation.” He said, “If the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness;” Surely, no Christian will say that the Word of God in any way supports Spiritism.
But the question is always asked, “What about Samuel and Saul?”
According to the Christian’s Bible, Saul certainly did communicate with Samuel after he had died; and certainly Saul reached the dead Samuel through a medium. This was one of the divers ways in times past that God spake unto men. Hebrews 1:1. God certainly spoke to Saul through Samuel.
This is the only time that God ever spoke to any one in just this way. He spoke through the rich man in hades and Lazarus in Abraham’s bosom, after both had died. He has a message for us in this story which we shall hear presently.
But who would say that King Saul did a commendable thing when he went to the medium, contrary to God’s word? Surely his disobedience met with God’s disapproval.
Hear the condemnation of God upon Saul’s wicked visit to the witch of Endor.
“So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;
And enquired not of the Lord: therefore He slew him” I Chronicles 10:13 and 14.
Now the absurdity of any one claiming to be a Christian and supporting their evil practice by the experience of a wicked man who was slain by God for that experience.
Now, we ask you to turn to the twenty-eighth chapter of I Samuel and read God’s record of that experience carefully, beginning with the seventh verse. You will note these outstanding points.
1. Saul disguised himself.
2. He came to the woman by night.
3. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice.
4. The woman saw gods or (God) ascending out of the earth.
5. Saul said to Samuel, “God is departed from me” and answereth me no more.”
6. Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord is become thine enemy.” Thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord.”
Should Christians disguise themselves and go to a woman witch by night to talk with the dead? If they should be so wicked and immoral as to do such a thing, they ought to disguise themselves and wait for the darkness of midnight; but after they do they ought to do what Saul did after his evil act,—“He fell straightaway all along the earth.” Remember that the Holy Spirit had departed from Saul and he was possessed with an evil spirit at the time of his visit.
The human heart is desperately wicked, an evil heart of unbelief that will not receive God’s revelation. God has clearly answered that old, but ever new question.
“Man wasteth away, yea man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?”
God in His holy Word has told us all about the hereafter, that great unseen world, and man’s eternal experience after his days on earth are over.
My dear friend, if you have lost a loving companion, and you are lonely, sad, discouraged, almost desperate, do not seek solace in some Satanic delusion. Believe God’s Word. In that blessed Book you can learn all about the present whereabouts of the dead, the whence and whither of the human race. Reject the Bible, there is nothing but darkness, uncertainty and despair.
Thousands have been deceived in ancient and modern Spiritism. Satan can easily impersonate by means of his evil spirits and deceive the soul of man. Do you remember what Paul said to a sorcerer in his day?
“O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?” Acts 13:10.
He met another one, a woman, a soothsayer possessed with the spirit of divination. He said to the evil spirit in her, “I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her and he came out the same hour.”
Demon possession is a very common thing in religious circles today, even the worship of demons; but there is nothing new about it. Satan is still the same Satan, though he may change his tactics.
Many splendid people have seen and communed with others in the spirit world; but they have always been deceived by an evil spirit. The “others” were not spirits of people who had ever lived on earth.
I am going to quote here several verses of Scripture so you can get God’s answer to this question:
“If a man die, shall he live again?”
“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he, (Christ) also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the Devil”. Hebrews 2:14.
“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man”. . . Hebrews 2:9.
“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.
But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” II Timothy 1:9 and 10.
“I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death”. Revelation 1:18.
“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live”. John 11:25.
“And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
He is not here, but is risen: remember how He spake unto you when He was yet in Galilee”. Luke 24: 5 and 6.
“Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God”. Acts 7:56.
“And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.” Acts 7:59 and 60.
“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord”. II Corinthians 5:8.
“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
“But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at His coming”. I Corinthians 15: 22 and 23.
Now we spoke of the message God has for each one of us in the story of the rich man and Lazarus. We quote these words of the One who conquered death and who is now seated at God’s right hand in heaven.
“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day;
And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried;
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
And he cried and said, father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed; so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Abraham said unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead”. Luke 16:19 to 31.
I want to call your attention to the statement of David concerning his little baby that had died.
“But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me”. II Samuel 12:23.
God would teach His children by this verse that we can go to our loved ones who die, but they cannot come back to us.
Compare this statement of David with statement in Hebrews 13:20. “The God of peace, that brought again from dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep.”
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, He was buried, He was raised again the third day according to the Scriptures. He became the firstfruits of them that slept. And at His coming those who are His will receive resurrection bodies and thus be made alive.
Then, if we want to be sure that we shall be made alive at the coming of Christ, we must be sure that we are His. In order that you may see just what will take place when Jesus comes again we quote for you I Thessalonians 4:13 to 18.
“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.
For this we say unto you by the Word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not precede them which are asleep.
For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
Wherefore comfort one another with these words”.
Some of those who are to be Christ’s at His coming are those who have fallen asleep in Jesus; those who have died in the faith. Mortality is the common heritage of all people. Only believers have eternal life. Only those will have eternal life after death who have eternal life before death. Eternal life is the free gift of God. Jesus said “Verily, I say unto you, he that heareth My Word and believeth Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life and shall not come into judgment; but is passed from death to life”. John 5:24.
Paul said, “You hath He made alive who were dead in trespasses and sin.”
All who belong to Christ are rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God; for Christ is in them, the hope of glory.
“When Christ who is our life shall appear then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.”
When the believer falls asleep his body goes to corruption, but his spirit goes to be with the Lord Jesus in heaven, and there he remains in a conscious state, out of the realm of sin, and sorrow, and death, and sickness and temptation until Jesus Christ shall come back again. At that time he shall be clothed upon with his house which is from heaven, and in that incorruptible body he shall enjoy that inheritance incorruptible, undefiled and that fadeth not away. At the same moment of this glorious resurrection every living believer on this earth will be caught up to meet Christ.
Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection; over such the second death hath no power.
When the unbeliever dies, his body likewise goes to corruption; but his soul goes to hades, to remain absent from the body in a conscious state of torment until the resurrection of the unjust, after the millennium to be judged in the body at the great white throne judgment. And then to be banished into outer darkness to suffer the sorrow of the second death.
This is the plain teaching of God’s Word.
“And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life” Revelation 21:27.
“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire”. Revelation 20:15.
Hades is only the temporary abode of the wicked. The final doom is called the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
“The wages of sin is death.” “It is appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgment.”
“There is therefore, now no judgment to them that are in Christ Jesus.”
How true the words of the Lord, “If they believe not Moses and the prophets, they would not believe though one were raised from the dead.”

Asleep in Jesus! blessed sleep.
From which none ever wakes to weep!

Remember this solemn warning of the Lord Jesus Christ: “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”
“Behold, I have told you before”. Matthew 24:24 and 25.

LESSON ONE

Note first the following verses in this Epistle:

Ephesians 3:1
“For this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you GENTILES.”

Ephesians 2:11 to 13
“Wherefore remember, that you being in time past GENTILES in the flesh. who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made with hands That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world, But now in Christ Jesus, ye who sometime were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”

Ephesians 3:6 and 8
“That the GENTILES should be fellow heirs and of the same Body, and partakers of His promise in Christ by the gospel,”
“Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the GENTILES the unsearchable riches of Christ.”

Ephesians 4:17 and 18.
“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other GENTILES walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.”

While it is true that in Christ Jesus there is neither Jew nor Gentile, yet the Epistle to the Ephesians contains a very definite message to Gentile saints; to those who had been Gentile sinners. It is interesting to note in Matthew 15:21 to 26 the great difference between Jews and Gentiles and the “no” difference in Romans 10:12 and Ephesians 2:13 to 17. Ephesians is addressed to the saints which are at Ephesus and to the faithful in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 1:1. Unlike some of Paul’s other Epistles, Ephesians does not deal specifically with the local assembly at Ephesus, but rather with the Body of Christ and the members of that Body. Some authorities say that Ephesus does not appear in some of the original manuscripts.
Note one of the principal reasons why Paul was led by the Holy Spirit to write this profound and Divine message:
Ephesians 4:14.
“That ye henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and whereby they lie in wait to deceive”

In this connection let us study carefully I Corinthians 13:10 and 11—Hebrews 5:12 to Hebrews 6:1. Compare the verses in Hebrews with some statements of Paul’s to the Corinthians:
“But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; But when I became a man, I put away childish things.” I Corinthians 13:10 and 11.
“Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.” I Corinthians 12:2.
“And I, brethren, would not speak unto you as spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat; for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.” I Corinthians 3:1 to 3.
Now note:
Hebrews 5:12 to 6:1:
“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the Word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Therefore, leaving the principles of the doctrines of Christ, let us go on unto perfection.”

By carefully studying and comparing Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians with Ephesians we learn that most of the Corinthian Epistle is Divine truth for babes in Christ, while much in Ephesians is the Holy Spirit’s strong meat for those who are of full age and to be received by members of the Body of Christ and taught by the pastors and teachers:
“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect Man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:13.
This statement itself is “meat diet.”
If I Corinthians 2:14 is true, concerning the understanding of the milk of the Word, how much more so if saints are to understand the strong meat of Ephesians. Read that verse as to how Divine truth is spiritually discerned and then to understand the deep truth of Ephesians, note the Divine method in Ephesians 1:17 and 18:
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.”
Note Paul’s second prayer in Ephesians 3:16 to 19: “That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”
Thus we see that more than ordinary spiritual discernment is necessary for the comprehension of the deeper truth of Ephesians.
As a foundation, the student of Ephesians should first understand Galatians and Romans and he should by all means study carefully with Ephesians, the Epistle of Paul to the Colossians, and also II Timothy:
But note here Ephesians 1:1 and 5:3: “TO THE SAINTS”—“AS BECOMETH SAINTS”.
The Epistle to the Ephesians plainly tells how sinners become saints and how they are then to behave as becometh saints. Sinners do not become saints by behaving, but by believing. Then as believers they are to behave as becometh saints.
A saint is a saved person. “By the which will we are sanctified by the offering of Jesus Christ once for all.” Hebrews 10:10. Read also Hebrews 13:12 and Hebrews 10:14.
Note carefully II Thessalonians 2:13, that the believer is chosen unto salvation by sanctification. Then read I Corinthians 6:9 to 11 and see that sanctification precedes justification. But there is also a sanctification that follows.

LESSON TWO
GOD’S WORKMANSHIP CREATED UNTO GOOD WORKS

Sinners are made saints by God’s grace, by God “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus UNTO good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10.
God’s workmanship. Created in Christ Jesus. Unto good works. This is the Divine order. God’s workmanship. Then God’s workmen.
Compare with Ephesians 2:9 “Not OF works, lest any man should boast.” There is a great difference between OF good works, a contributing factor, and UNTO good works, the fruit and evidence of salvation. No sinner’s works in any way help to save him. They that are in the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:8.
The particular sinners referred to in Ephesians 2:1 to 10 were Gentiles who had been aliens from the commonwealth of Israel. Note their history, what they were before becoming new creatures in Christ Jesus:
“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” Ephesians 2:2 and 3.
“Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.” Ephesians 4:18.
Then carefully note the “BUT GOD” in Ephesians 2:4 and the “BUT NOW” in Ephesians 2:13. “But God, Who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us.” “But now, in Christ Jesus, ye who sometime were far off were made nigh by the blood of Christ.”
Thus we see the human material out of which God made saints—and still makes saints—and the Divine process by which these sinners were made saints. Because of the grace, the rich mercy and great love of God and because of the power, and value, and efficacy of the precious shed blood of the Son of God a supernatural transformation took place; dead sinners were made living saints.
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:6 to 8.
“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints and of the household of God.” Ephesians 2:19.
“For ye were sometime darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” Ephesians 5:8.
Made alive. Raised up and seated in the heavenlies. Saved. No longer afar off. Members of the Body of Christ. In the light. All by the infinite grace of God and by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
“And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” Ephesians 4:24.

SAVED AND SEALED

Then note:
Ephesians 1:13 and 4:30:
“In Whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the Word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in Whom also, after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.”
“And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”

“After that ye believed”, in the Greek, is one word, “PISTEUSANTES”. The word is “BELIEVING” or “On believing” the gospel of salvation the believer is sealed unto the day of redemption; that is, until the day, hour, and moment that the dead in Christ and those who are alive rise in glorified bodies to meet the Lord Jesus Christ.

So then the believing sinner:
Is saved,
Is sainted (sanctified),
Is sealed,
Is seated in the heavenlies,
Is secure.

All of the spiritual blessings and benefits guaranteed to the believer are summed up in the one statement:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3.
Blessed with ALL spiritual blessings in the heavenlies.
Note also Ephesians 3:20: “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,” God is able. Note God’s ability and His mighty power in this verse and in Ephesians 1:19 and 20: “And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, Which He wrought in Christ when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places.”
The redemption of the believing sinner is according to the riches of God’s grace. Ephesians 1:7. Where sin abounded grace did much more abound. There is no limit to God’s grace and God’s power.
So we see that the blessings of the believer are according to the mighty power of God and according to the riches of God’s grace. What human being can estimate the mighty power of God or the riches of God’s grace? Surely we all believe and know that God is able to do for us exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. This power is toward us. Ephesians 1:19. This power worketh in us. Ephesians 3:20.
When the believer believes the glorious truth of Ephesians and realizes what God guarantees him in Christ, he will surely not seek for more power by resorting to some fantastical religious scheme. Neither will he be looking for a second blessing when he knows the truth of Ephesians 1:3.
“All blessings (in the heavenlies)”, “All power”—and according to II Corinthians 9:8; “all grace”. And God is the God of all grace. I Peter 5:10.

LESSON THREE
GOD’S ETERNAL PURPOSE

God’s eternal purpose. The Epistle to the Ephesians tells us of God’s eternal purpose. The message and program of Ephesians is according to that Divine purpose. Note Ephesians 3:11:
“ACCORDING TO THE ETERNAL PURPOSE WHICH HE PURPOSED IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD.”
Before we study the eternal purpose in Ephesians let us see how it is stated in Romans 8:28 to 32—II Timothy 1:9 and 10—Romans 16:25—I Corinthians 2:7 and 8.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose. For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover, whom He did predestinate, them He also called: and whom He called, them He also justified: and whom He justified, them He also glorified. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us who can be against us? He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” Romans 8:28 to 32.
“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began; But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, Who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” II Timothy 1:9 and 10.
“Now to Him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began.” Romans 16:25.
“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory; Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it. they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” I Corinthians 2:7 and 8.
Here we learn the fallacy of teaching that God’s eternal purpose, His mystery or secret, was not made known to the apostle Paul until after the “Acts” period closed, for Corinthians and Romans were written during the “Acts” period. But we know that there is no clear statement concerning this blessed truth, explaining the mystery, until we come to Paul’s prison Epistles.
Note in Romans 8:28: According to God’s purpose, He foreknew and predestinated:
Note in II Timothy 1:9, according to God’s eternal purpose, grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.
Note in I Corinthians 2:7 and 8, this was ordained to our glory before the world began.
Note in Romans 16:25, the preaching of Paul’s gospel, according to the revelation of the mystery, was kept secret since before the world began.
Thus we have the light from other Scriptures on the eternal purpose of God in Christ Jesus. God purposed this before the world began: God kept His eternal purpose a secret. The risen Lord revealed it to Paul by revelation. It is called “the mystery of God’s will.” (Ephesians 1:9). “The mystery of the gospel” (Ephesians 6:19 and 20). This eternal purpose of God concerning the members of the Body of Christ and His dispensation of grace was not made known to the sons of men in other ages:

Colossians 1:25 and 26.
“Whereof I Paul am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfill (complete) the Word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to His saints.”

God predestinated this Divine economy, purpose and program, but He did not permit His Old Testament servants to prophesy it. He did not even disclose it to them. Therefore, it is called “THE MYSTERY” in Ephesians.
Note:
Ephesians 3:8:
“Unto me who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given that I should preach among the Gentiles “THE UNSEARCHABLE RICHES OF CHRIST”.

Here the Holy Spirit refers to “the mystery of God’s will”, “the mystery of the gospel”, “the eternal purpose of God”, as “THE UNSEARCHABLE RICHES OF CHRIST.” The Greek root of the word “unsearchable” is a word meaning “step” or “track.” Therefore the word means “UNTRACEABLE” or “CANNOT BE TRACKED”.
By way of contrast note truth concerning Christ that could be tracked:

Acts 17:11.
“These were more noble than those at Thessalonica, in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

The Bereans could confirm or refute Paul’s message of Christ by searching the Scriptures from Genesis to Malachi, but no one could confirm or deny the “MYSTERY” truth of Ephesians by diligently studying the Scriptures from Genesis to Malachi, because all of the faithful servants of the Lord who wrote those inspired messages were both silent and ignorant concerning the unrevealed mystery, later made known to Paul. Peter and the eleven who were associated with Jesus of Nazareth during His earthly ministry, could throw no light on the subject. They remembered John 16:12 and 13: “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.” But what they learned of the new dispensation of grace, the new commission, and the spiritual program for members of the Body of Christ, they learned from Paul. Now note Paul’s words:
Ephesians 1:9 and 11
“Having made known unto us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He hath purposed in Himself:
That in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him.”

Here we learn that the mystery of God’s will was according to God’s pleasure and purpose. But note that God had now made it known. It therefore should no longer be a secret. The secret has been told. The mystery has been disclosed. Members of Christ’s Body, predestinated according to God’s purpose, are to constitute “One New Man”, Ephesians 2:15.

THE PROPHESIED KINGDOM NOT THE BODY

We learn from these Scriptures and others that God’s eternal purpose is His predestinated purpose and “grace” program, that purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. All of this differs from God’s prophetic “kingdom of heaven” program. Note in Mark 1:15 that the prophesied kingdom was at hand because the time was fulfilled; the King had come to the kingdom nation. But when the apostle Paul made known the eternal purpose of God he did not say, “the time is fulfilled”, because there was no such fulfillment in connection with God’s unprophesied “grace” program. During this age the prophesied kingdom of Christ is in abeyance. There has been an interruption or suspension of God’s kingdom covenants. The kingdom of heaven that was at hand when Christ was here as Jesus of Nazareth in the land of the Jews has been postponed. The kingdom of the Son of God’s love, in Colossians 1:12 to 14, is not the same kingdom of the Son of man mentioned in Matthew 25:31 to 44. That prophesied kingdom shall surely he established on the earth when Christ, the Son of man, comes to earth as King.
Yes, “We have also a more sure Word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts.” II Peter 1:19. The Son of man is coming back to earth. “And He shall send Jesus Christ, Which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things which God hath spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.” Acts 3:20 and 21.
Jesus Christ is coming back to earth from heaven to bring about the restitution of all things. All of God’s prophets, from the very beginning of prophets, foretold this Divine kingdom. Note I Peter 1:11: “Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.” The Spirit of Christ was in the prophets, foretelling Christ’s death on the cross and His kingdom glory on earth. They did not know that there would be a long parenthetical period between the sufferings and the glory of the Messiah. None of these prophets said anything or knew anything concerning the heavenly position, and possessions of members of Christ’s Body during this grace parenthetical age, or concerning the present ministry of the risen Christ. Therefore this unprophesied economy is called “the dispensation of the mystery” or “the administration of the secret.” The truth concerning this economy is called “the unsearchable riches of Christ”—“the mystery of God’s will”—“the mystery of the gospel.”
Note how Paul states this:
Colossians 1:24 to 26:
“Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for His Body’s sake, which is the Church: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfill (complete) the Word of God; Even the mystery which has been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to His saints.”

Here we read that the mystery was not in fulfillment of the Word of God but to “fill up” or “complete” the Word of God. Thus, in rightly dividing the Word of Truth, we must know the difference between the hope, calling, and sphere of blessing for saints in the PROPHESIED KINGDOM of Christ and the hope, calling and sphere of blessing for saints in the UNPROPHESIED, PREDESTINATED Body of Christ.

Compare the words of the Lord Jesus in Matthew 5:17 and 18 with the words of Paul in Colossians 1:24 to 26, and see the difference between events which fulfilled the prophets and those which completed the Word of God.

LESSON FOUR
THE GOSPEL OF YOUR SALVATION THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL

Let us compare and contrast the gospel in Ephesians 1:13 and the gospel in Ephesians 6:19 and 20:
Ephesians 1:13.
“In Whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the Word of Truth, THE GOSPEL OF YOUR SALVATION; in Whom also, after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.”
Ephesians 6:19 and 20
“And for me, that utterance may be given unto me that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL. For which I am an ambassador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Now let us carefully consider:
I Corinthians 15:1 to 4
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.”
Galatians 1:9
“As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”

Here we read of God’s saving message, the fact of the death, the burial and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. But let us keep in mind that all of this was “according to the Scriptures”. This is stated also in:
Acts 13:29 and 30:
“And when they had fulfilled all that was written of Him, they took Him down from the tree, and laid Him in a sepulchre. But God raised Him from the dead.”

And God’s Word is very clear, that if any one preaches any other gospel for the sinner’s salvation, let him be anathema. So to the sinner the servant of God is to preach the prophesied gospel or suffer the consequences. No one can be saved except by faith in Christ and His redemptive work.
But if God’s servants are to understand the “strong meat” of Ephesians, they must believe and know that the apostle Paul was not in the jail at Rome for proclaiming the prophesied gospel of I Corinthians 15:1 to 4; but for proclaiming “the unsearchable riches of Christ”, for making others to see “the dispensation of the mystery” which from the beginning of the world had been hid in God. Ephesians 3:8 to 9.
There is a difference between “the gospel” of I Corinthians 15:1 to 4 and “the mystery of the gospel” for which Paul was the prisoner of the Lord Jesus Christ. Israel’s prophets foretold the sufferings and the glory of Christ. I Peter 1:10 to 12. They foretold His death and resurrection and His coming glorious reign on David’s throne. Isaiah 9:6 and 7.
But the dispensation and message for which Paul suffered as an evildoer (II Timothy 2:8 and 9) was hid from ages and from generations. Colossians 1:26.

DIFFERENT GOSPELS

Note Matthew 9:35—Acts 20:24—Ephesians 6:19 and 20:
“And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching “THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM” and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Matthew 9:35.
But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify “THE GOSPEL OF THE GRACE OF GOD.” Acts 20:24.
“And for me that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known “THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL”, For which I am an ambassador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly.” Ephesians 6:19 and 20.
Jesus of Nazareth on earth was presenting. Himself to Israel as King as well as Saviour while many individual Jews received Him as their individual Saviour and were saved. Note Acts 13:23: “Of this man’s seed hath God, according to His promise, raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus.” The Record is, “He came unto His own and His own received Him not.” John 1:11. This was not only true in His incarnation but in His resurrection. Note Acts 5:30 and 31: “The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, Whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.”
When the gospel of the kingdom was preached David’s throne and the nation Israel were in view. Not only did Christ and the twelve apostles preach a saving message to individual Jews, but they proclaimed the presence of the KING and His Kingdom at hand for the KINGDOM nation. Compare Matthew 10:5 to 8 and Luke 9:6 with Luke 18:31 to 34.
“These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand, Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:5 to 8.
“And they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.” Luke 9:6
“Then He, took unto Him the Twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For He shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge Him and put Him to death; and the third day He shall rise again. And they understood none of these things and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.” Luke 18:31 to 34.
Carefully note what the apostles did not know and understand.
Here we learn that Peter and the Eleven were sent to Israel—not to Gentiles—to proclaim the kingdom gospel, to heal and perform miracles. They obeyed and had great success. But after preaching the gospel of the kingdom for two years they did not know the gospel of I Corinthians 15:1 to 4 that Christ was to die for our sins, be buried and raised again. It is true that in Luke 24:21 to 26 the risen Christ called them fools for not knowing the prophesied truth; but the statement in Luke 18:34 is: “And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.” This was after they had preached the gospel for many months. What gospel? Not the gospel of I Corinthians 15:1 to 4, not the gospel of Acts 20:24. Note again Acts 20:24: “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24.
With this, note Titus 2:11: “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.” What a difference! In Matthew 10:5 to 8 the kingdom of heaven was at hand for Israel but not for Gentiles. But in Acts 20:24 the grace of God is at hand for all men. Note the gospel of grace in Romans 3:24 and in Ephesians 2:8 and 9:
“Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:24.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8 and 9.
Compare this gospel of grace with Christ’s message in Luke 13:24 and Peter’s message to Cornelius in Acts 10:34 and 35:
“Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” Luke 13:24.
“Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth Him and worketh righteousness is accepted with Him.” Acts 10:34 and 35.
There is quite a difference.
Again compare Matthew 24:13 and 14 with Romans 4:3 and 4:
“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” Matthew 24:13 and 14.
“For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.”
Then read Romans 4:5, “to him that worketh not, but believeth.”
Which gospel do you prefer? Certainly if the anathema of God is on the servant of God who preaches another gospel to the lost sinner in this day of grace, that curse is upon the messenger who substitutes the gospel of the kingdom for the gospel of the grace of God, or who perverts the gospel of the grace of God by mixing it with the gospel of the kingdom. Even the babe in Christ should know the difference between Peter’s message to Cornelius and Paul’s message in Romans 4:4 and 5 and Titus 3:3 to 8. Open your Bible and compare them.
How about Galatians 2:7?
“BUT CONTRARIWISE, WHEN THEY SAW THAT THE GOSPEL OF THE UNCIRCUMCISION WAS COMMITTED UNTO ME; AS THE GOSPEL OF THE CIRCUMCISION WAS UNTO PETER.”
Think of the man who claims to be God’s Bible teacher, teaching that there is no difference between “the gospel of the circumcision” and “the gospel of the uncircumcision.” Surely they have forgotten that Genesis 15:4 to 6—Genesis 17:3 to 18—Acts 7:8—Romans 4:6 to 12—Galatians 3:8, are in the Bible. Galatians 2:7 means far more than the fact that Peter was preaching to the Jews and that Paul was presenting the same Divine program to the Gentiles.
Note the decision of James, Peter and John and Paul in Acts 15:19—Acts 21:25—Galatians 2:9: “Wherefore, my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles, are turned to God.” Acts 15:19.
“As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication.” Acts 21:25.
“And when James, Peter and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.” Galatians 2:9.
Were all of these men out of the will of God? During the Acts period was there not one order for the believing Jews and another order for the believing Gentiles? Were Peter, James, and John out of the will of God when they agreed with Paul that they would go to the Jews when the resurrected Christ told them to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature? Mark 16:14 to 18. They most assuredly were if the risen Christ did not give to Paul a new commission different from Matthew 28:19 and 20 and thereby bring in a new dispensation. Note carefully Acts 13:2, II Corinthians 5:18 to 21, Galatians 1:11 and 12.
Why is it that we find in the Book of Acts the record of three or four missionary journeys by Paul but no record of any missionary journeys by Peter or his fellow-apostles? In Acts 8:1, we learn that the Twelve remained in Jerusalem. When Peter preached to the children of the covenant, the covenant of circumcision had not been abrogated. Acts 3:22 to 26—Acts 7:8—Acts 5:29 to 32—Acts 10:28.
At least fourteen years after Paul was converted he went by Divine revelation to Jerusalem to tell Peter and the Eleven of the gospel of the uncircumcision which Paul received by revelation. Galatians 2:1 to 5. There was no thought of the gospel of the uncircumcision in the great commission of Matthew 28:19 and 20. Note Peter’s words concerning Paul and his messages:
“And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; as also in all his Epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other Scriptures, unto their own destruction.” II Peter 3:15 and 16.
If the twelve apostles had to learn from Paul what the gospel of the uncircumcision was, are we to assume or presume that they learned what was “the mystery of the gospel” until they first heard it from the special ambassador of Christ to whom it was revealed?
Let us be assured that Paul was not in the Roman prison for preaching any message that Peter had either preached or heard until after it had been revealed to Paul. Paul was in jail for “the mystery of the gospel”. Ephesians 6:19 and 20. If Paul had done what most Christian preachers today claim that he did, he would never have been in jail for “the mystery” They claim that Paul continued to proclaim the same message that the twelve apostles had been preaching. If they would do a little prayerful, careful thinking, they would decide that if this had been true, some of the other apostle: would have been in jail for the mystery. They all preached I Corinthians 15:1 to 4. but the mystery of the gospel was different.
To he sure, Paul did proclaim a CONFIRMATION” message, preaching many of the prophesied truths that Peter and the Eleven preached, but Paul in addition, had a distinctive “REVELATION” ministry, which Christ did not command the Twelve to preach, either while He was on earth or in the chapters of Acts in which their work is recorded. They agreed to go to the circumcision years after the Pentecost of Acts 2, years after Peter had preached to the one company of Gentiles Acts Galatians 2:9. Note carefully that after Paul received his commission in Acts 13:2 there is no record of the activities of the Twelve in the Book of Acts, except as they had dealings with Paul.
After this we learn in Acts 21:18 to Acts 22:21, that James had access to the Jewish services in Jerusalem, whereas the same Jews tried to tear Paul into pieces when he even visited Jerusalem and entered their temple. Read these verses and ask yourself the question, why did they want to kill Paul and not harm James twenty-five years after the death of Christ, if Paul and James were carrying on the same spiritual program? How will you answer your own question? By saying, “they were not”; “I have been mistaken”.
So we see that Paul was in the Roman jail for preaching something that the Twelve had not preached.

THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL

The word “gospel” is a comprehensive word referring to many spiritual benefits and blessings for saints as well as the saving message for sinners. The word means “good news” and is also translated “glad tidings”. Every spiritual, intelligent student of the Scripture, knows the difference between the glad tidings of the kingdom and the good news called “the gospel of the grace of God.” Many ungracious remarks would never have been uttered, many bitter, unprofitable controversies would have been avoided had these same spiritual, intelligent students of the Scriptures earnestly prayed the prayer of Ephesians 1:16 and 17, and learned in this way the difference between the gospel whereby the sinner is saved (I Corinthians 15:1 to 4) and the gospel for the saint as revealed in Ephesians and Colossians, “the mystery of the gospel”.
Perhaps the pastors and teachers are somewhat responsible for the appalling ignorance of this most blessed truth for saints in all the Bible. They are expected to he faithful stewards of the mysteries of God. I Corinthians 4:1 to 3. They are to obey Ephesians 3:9, to “make all men see the dispensation of the mystery.” God has made known “the mystery of His will”—His predestinated eternal purpose in Christ Jesus concerning the heavenly position, blessings and conflict of members of the Body of Christ, identified with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection, seated-with Him far above principalities and powers and dominions. Ephesians 1:9. The Lord’s servants are to pray for open doors and open, mouths for the proclamation of this glorious message. Note:
Colossians 4:3 and 4:
“Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: That I may make it manifest as I ought to speak.”
And:
Ephesians 6:19 and 20
“And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the, gospel. For which I am an ambassador in bonds that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”

Some men preach that Jews and Gentiles are now in the same Body and think they have proclaimed the mystery. It is true that the Joint-Body of Ephesians 3:6 is one aspect of the great mystery, but there is so much beside that. Surely it should not require the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, mentioned in Ephesians 1:17 and 18, to know that believing Jews and Gentiles were baptized in one Spirit in one Body. The carnal babes of Corinth knew that much. But for those of full age God, by the Holy Spirit, would give them much more knowledge concerning His eternal purpose during this grace period when He is edifying the Body of Christ. Ephesians 4:13 and 14.

LESSON FIVE

RECONCILED BOTH UNTO GOD IN ONE BODY

Ephesians 2:14 to 16
“For He is our peace, Who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in His flesh the enmity even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain One New Man, so making peace; And that He might reconcile both unto God in one Body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby.”

The doctrine of reconciliation is one of the, most interesting studies in the Bible. It is first mentioned in connection with Paul’s ministry in Romans 5:10 to 12—II Corinthians 5:17 and 18 and Romans 11:15:
“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son; much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through, our Lord Jesus Christ, by Whom we have now received the reconciliation. Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world; and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Romans 5:10 to 12,
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, Who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation.” II Corinthians 5:17 and 18.
“For if the casting away of them (the Jews) be the reconciling of the world,” Romans 11:15.
Note first in Romans 5:11 and 12, “RECONCILIATION—WHEREFORE AS BY ADAM”. Here we note that Adam is mentioned in connection with reconciliation. Then in II Corinthians 5:17 and 18 we observe that the new creature is identified with the ministry of reconciliation, as we observe in Romans 6:1 to 15 and II Corinthians 5:13 to 16, that the believer is identified with Christ because of his reconciliation. Therefore, in God’s Word, the new creation, identification and reconciliation are linked together.
On earth Jesus Christ was the minister of the circumcision. Romans 15:8. Note Matthew 1:1: “The Book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.” He was sent to Israel. Matthew 15:24 and Acts 13:23. Jesus Christ called the Jews, “the children of the kingdom”. Matthew 8:11 and 12. He called the Gentiles, “dogs”. Matthew 15:25 and 26. At that time God had not broken down the middle wall of partition between them:

Ephesians 2:11 to 13:
“Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called Circumcision in the flesh made with hands. That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world; But now, in Christ Jesus, ye who sometime were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”

Note the contrast “at that time”, “but now”. The children of the kingdom were to be cast into outer darkness and the Gentiles were to be brought in. Matthew 8:11 and 12. Note Christ’s words to the children of the kingdom and their reply:
“I know that ye are Abraham’s seed but ye seek to kill me, because My Word hath no place in you” “They answered and said unto Him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham” John 8:37 and 39.
Now note the judgment which Christ pronounced upon the children of the kingdom:
“Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see Me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.” Matthew 23:33 and 39.
“Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.” Matthew 21:43.
“And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.” Luke 21:20.
Note very carefully just when Israel’s desolation was to take place. When armies compassed Jerusalem. Had the armies compassed Jerusalem when twelve apostles stood up on the Jewish feast day in the Jewish city and addressed devout Jews from every nation all the house of Israel? Acts 2:5 and 36. Certainly not. Therefore Israel’s desolation had not taken place when Peter and the Eleven preached to Israel on the day of Pentecost.
What meaneth the warning of Paul in Acts 13:40 and 41, if the kingdom nation had been set aside? Note these verses:
“Beware, therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; Behold ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.”
It is true that the Lord Jesus called the children of the kingdom, “serpents” and “a generation of vipers” in Matthew 23:33, but some months later they were addressed in words of tenderness and grace . Read:
Acts 3:15, 17, 25 and 26:
“And killed the Prince of life, Whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.”
“And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.”
“Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first God, having raised up His Son Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from His iniquities.”
We would emphasize the words “UNTO YOU FIRST”. Unto whom? The children of the prophets and the covenant, the seed of Abraham. Nothing here for the other children of Adam, except for the proselytes of Acts 2:10. It was unlawful for the apostles to go to the Gentiles. Acts 10:28. First the children of the kingdom with their rulers must be given the opportunity to receive the resurrected Messiah, or commit the unpardonable sin against the witness of the Holy Spirit. Note carefully:
Acts 5:29 to 32:
“Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, Whom ye slew and hanged on a tree Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance TO ISRAEL, and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Spirit, Whom God hath given to them that obey Him.”

In this connection read in Matthew 12:31 and 32 the Lord’s statement of Israel’s pardonable sin and their unpardonable sin: “Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whoso speaketh against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
Then note Matthew 26:24 and Luke 23:34:
“The Son of man goeth as it is written of Him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had never been born.” “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted His raiment and cast lots.”
Never lose the full meaning and efficacy of this prayer of Christ on the cross.
Then note Acts 2:23—Acts 3:18—Acts 4:27 and 28.
“Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain.” “But those things, which God before had showed by the mouth of all His prophets, that Christ should suffer, He hath so fulfilled.” “For of a truth against Thy Holy Child Jesus, Whom Thou hast anointed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever Thy hand and Thy counsel determined before to be done.”
The Son of man had to go. His death was foreordained, predestinated and prophesied. He was delivered according to the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. His death was inevitable, therefore the sin of Israel against the Son of man was pardonable.
But note, in Acts 13:45 and 46, and in Acts 18:5 and 6, their unpardonable sin and then what happened:
“But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, it was necessary that the Word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing you put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, LO, WE TURN TO THE GENTILES.”
“And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.”
The story is told in Romans 11:30 and 15:
“For as ye in times past have not believed God, ye have now obtained mercy through their unbelief.” “For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?”
What do we learn from these Scriptures? We most assuredly learn that Israel was not set aside before Pentecost. We learn that the kingdom of God was not taken away from Israel suddenly before Christ’s death but gradually during the period covered by the Book of Acts. We learn that the children of the kingdom were not cast aside into the outer darkness until after Paul received his new commission in Acts 13:2. We learn that reconciliation was sent to Gentiles when and because Israel blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, because they would not repent when the Holy Spirit witnessed of the resurrection of the Son of man, Whom Stephen saw standing at the right hand of God. When and because they put the Word of God from them and committed the unpardonable sin, Paul said, “LO, WE TURN TO THE GENTILES”. It was then that reconciliation was sent to Gentiles.
Therefore we learn that we are not to understand from Ephesians 2:15 to 18, that reconciliation for the Gentiles began at the time Christ died on the cross. The “far off” of Acts 2:39 referred to the dispersion, the scattered Israelites. Daniel 9:6 to 8.
Note again the ministry of the twelve apostles before and after the Lord Jesus committed unto Paul the ministry of reconciliation:
“AND WHEN JAMES, PETER AND JOHN, WHO SEEMED TO BE PILLARS, PERCEIVED THE GRACE THAT WAS GIVEN UNTO ME. THEY GAVE TO ME AND BARNABAS THE RIGHT HANDS OF FELLOWSHIP; THAT WE SHOULD GO UNTO THE HEATHEN, AND THEY UNTO THE CIRCUMCISION.” Galatians 2:9.
A. wonderful story is told us in the thirteenth chapter of Acts. Note verse 12:
“THEN THE DEPUTY, WHEN HE SAW WHAT WAS DONE, BELIEVED, BEING ASTONISHED AT THE DOCTRINE OF THE LORD.”:
Sergius, Paulus, the Gentile, saw the miracle of blindness upon the Jew and believed unto salvation. The Jew was Barjesus. This means “the child of Jehovah Saviour”. The nation Israel was the child of Jehovah Saviour, created for God’s own glory. Romans 9:4 to 6. This was, a dispensational miracle. Note:
Romans 11:7 and 8:25:
“What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.” “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits, that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.”

Israel’s blindness brought blessing to the Gentiles, the ministry of reconciliation. Therefore, inasmuch as the message of reconciliation and the new dispensation did not begin before the thirteenth of Acts, we should not go to the other side of that chapter for our marching orders. So far as we are concerned, in this day of grace, the commission of II Corinthians 5:18 to 21, is a greater “Great Commission” than is the commission to the twelve apostles, in Matthew 28:19 and 20.
The death of the Lord Jesus Christ was inevitable. He said, “For this cause came I unto this hour.” John 12:27 to 31. Note Hebrews 2:9 and I Peter 1:18 to 20. Because of this fact and because of Christ’s prayer for Israel on the cross (Luke 23:34) Israel was given the opportunity to receive the resurrected Christ. But the rulers refused. They sinned and blasphemed against the Holy Spirit. Acts 13:45 and Acts 18:5. Then Paul was sent to the Gentiles with the message of reconciliation. Romans 11:15.
He wrote to the Colossians that Jesus Christ made peace by the blood of His cross to reconcile all things unto Himself. Colossians 1:20. Then note the next verse; “And you that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath He reconciled.” The Gentiles had been alienated from the life of God. Ephesians 4:18. Alienated in and by Adam. Reconciled in and by Christ. When? After Israel had received the Divine judgment mentioned in Romans Eleven.

LESSON SIX

THE FULNESS OF CHRIST

The Church of the mystery is called the “JointBody” in Ephesians 3:6. The “same Body” in this verse should be translated “Joint-Body.”
“Which is His Body, the fulness of Him that filleth all and in all.”
“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect Man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” Ephesians 1:23 and 4:13.
Meditate upon this: “HIS BODY, THE FULNESS OF HIM THAT FILLETH ALL IN ALL.” Here we learn that the Church is the filling-up of Christ. It completes Christ.
Christ ascended up far above all heavens, that He might fill all things. Ephesians 4:10.
Then note Colossians 1:19 and 2:9:
“For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fulness dwell.”
“For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
Then note Colossians 2:10 and Ephesians 3:19: “And ye are complete in Him, Which is the Head of all principality and power.”
“Arid to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”
All fulness dwells in Christ. The believer is full in Christ. God wants the believer to be filled with all the fulness of Christ.
Note where the Father is going to bring the Church, “unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:13.
Let us compare the first part of this verse with Ephesians 2:15. “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man.” “Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain One New Man, so making, peace.”
God’s work of grace is to be “One New Man”. “the Perfect Man”. “One Body”, composed of Head and members.
Then note the final state of the Church when God shall complete it.
“That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word. That He might present it to Himself a glorious Church. not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:26 and 27
“According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.” Ephesians 1:4.
Surely in all of this we must glory in the sovereignty of God, in His infinite grace and in the wonders of Christ’s redemptive work, “As Christ also loved the Church and gave Himself for it.” Ephesians 5:25.
“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife. and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery; but I speak concerning Christ and the Church.” Ephesians 5:31 and 32.
Christ left His Father in heaven and His mother on earth. He suffered for sins once, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.
The Church of the mystery is “One Flesh” with Christ. “One New Man”. “The Fulness of Him that filleth all in all.” “The Perfect Man unto the stature of the Fulness of Christ.”
Christ the Head, “from which all the Body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.” Colossians 2:19.
“But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ. From Whom the whole Body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase, of the Body unto the edifying of itself in love” Ephesians 4:15 and 16.
This truly is blessed and glorious truth. Think of this identification. What a relationship. Union and unity! Surely there is no place for sectarianism in the Church of the mystery. The “One New Man” will be completed. It will be the work of God, the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.
And what a privilege is ours.
“For we are labourers together with God; ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereupon.” I Corinthians 3:9 and 10.
Labourers together with God, taking heed how we build together on the foundation laid by the wise masterbuilder, Paul.

THE BODY—THE BUILDING

Note how the work is laid out by God.
“And He gave some, apostles; and some prophets; and some, evangelists; and some pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the (building) Body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11 and 12.
“But unto everyone of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.” Ephesians 4:7.
Every member of the Body of Christ should obey Ephesians 4:1 to 6. They should walk worthy of the calling wherewith they are called. They should endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit. They should not add any sectarian religious ceremony or program to the seven-fold unity of Ephesians 4:4 to 6. Each member should recognize and exercise his or her gift and appropriate the grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
All members of the Body of Christ are members one of another and they should all labour as one man with one mind; and they should all know what God’s definite purpose is during the present “grace” economy. God is building a House.
All of the agents of Satan and all of the contrary opinions, schemes, and activities and religious programs of sectarian church-members will not prevent the completion of this Building, “For the edifying (building up) of the Body of Christ”, “till we all come in the unity of the faith.”
So we can see how much there is to know concerning the mystery of God’s will, the accomplishing of His eternal “grace” purpose during this Church age.
What a responsibility’’ God’s servants have as stewards of the mysteries of God and with Paul, the wise masterbuilder. They, must labour with God according to Paul’s instructions or be workmen who need to be ashamed. We are not instructed to bring in the kingdom that will be at hand when the King comes. We are not to expect the Church of the mystery to carry on. under the by laws and constitution of the kingdom of heaven that was; at hand, but is not now at hand. Surely members of the Body of Christ cannot walk worthy of the calling wherewith they are called until and unless they know what that calling is.
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” Ephesians 1:18
Every member of the Body of Christ should know that he has been made accepted in Christ, according to the riches of God’s grace; that he is complete in Christ; that he is seated in the heavenlies in Christ; that he is blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ; that in the ages to come God is going to shew the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness to us through Christ Jesus; and together the members of Christ’s Body will he the One New Man and the Perfect Man. As there will be just One New Man, there can be, in God’s plan, purpose and work, but one Body. Christians should earnestly contend for one Body, and one baptism, and obey Ephesians 3:9. “And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God Who created all things by Jesus Christ.”

FOR THE EDIFYING OF THE BODY OF CHRIST

This word “edifying”, in Ephesians 4:12, is the same Greek word as the word “building”, in Ephesians 2:21—In Whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord.”
God is building a Building. God is building up a Body, Christ’s’ Body. Thus the Church is a structure and an organism.
Note Romans is 12:4 and 5—“For as we have many members in one body, and all members have. not the same office: So we, being many, are one Body in Christ, and every one members one of another.”
Note also I Corinthians 12:25—“That there should be no schism in the Body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.”
God’s desire is that there should be no division in the Body; union but no disunion. All one in Christ. All the members of that one Body, being many; are one Body; so also is Christ.”
Until members of Christ’s Body come unto the unity of the faith, unto the Perfect Man, they are to endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the Bond of peace.
“Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one Body, and one. Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, Who is above all, and through you all.” Ephesians 4:3 to 6.
No member of the Body of Christ would think of teaching that there are many Christs or two Christs; many Holy Spirits, or two Holy Spirits; many hopes, or two hopes; and yet, behold the confusion and disunion among these who are all one, because of sectarian baptisms added to the one Divine baptism of Colossians 2:12 and Romans 6:3 and 4.
Christ’s baptism took place at Calvary. Luke 12:50. At the time the believer is saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ he is baptized into the death of Christ, and is therefore crucified with Christ. He is dead with Christ and buried with Christ by baptism. No human being can do for a fellow-believer what is done for him in the sixth chapter if Romans. That is Divine work-not human. If there is any water in Romans six, water is meritorious, efficacious and necessary for salvation. By the same Divine operation the dead and buried believer is raised up with Christ to walk in newness of life; to seek those things which are above while he is waiting for Christ to appear in glory. Colossians 3:1 to 4—Romans 6:3 to 6. The believer is seated in the heavenlies. His witness to the world that he is dead, buried, raised and seated, is told in Colossians 3:6 and Romans 6:11 to 13. A water ceremony would never prove to the world that the baptized one is a new creature in Christ. That proof is the believer’s spiritual behaviour.
But now for further consideration of Ephesians 4:15 and 16.
“But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ; From Whom the whole Body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the Body unto the edifying of itself in love.”
“Grow up into Christ in all things”. Christ is our life. Paul said, “For me to live is Christ.” I live, yet not I but Christ liveth in me”
The Building is being fitly framed together. The whole Body is fitly joined together. “Framed together” and “joined together” is one and the same word. Compacted by that which every joint supplieth, making increase of the Body.
Why do so many members of Christ’s Body behave as spiritual paupers when they have such a union with the Lord of Lords. His riches are our riches.
“But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19.
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13.
And let us again consider our unlimited spiritual resources:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3.

LESSON SEVEN

THE CONFLICT IN THE HEAVENLIES

Note carefully Ephesians 6:11 and 12:
“Put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies.”
This is a real conflict with a real supernatural power, a real personal devil, who is accused of the crime of deceiving the whole world. Revelation 12:9.
Concerning Satan, Paul said, “we are not ignorant of his devices.” II Corinthians 2:11. Paul wrote “Satan hindered me.” I Thessalonians 2:18. Note this remarkable statement concerning Satan, “And no marvel; for Satan Himself is transformed into an angel of light.” II Corinthians 11:14.
When we read of the power and audacity of Satan in his three propositions to the Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 4:1 to 13, we are not surprised that the Lord Jesus Christ acknowledged Satan to be “the prince of this world.” Read Luke 4:5 to 8 and John 14:30.
You and I should agree that the prince of this world has the world pretty much under his control. There is no exaggeration in the statement of I John 5:19:
“And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in the evil one.”
Then note II Corinthians 4:3 and 4 and Ephesians 2:2
“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this age hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, Who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.”
Note the words of the Lord Jesus in Matthew 13:38 and 39 and Matthew 13:4:
“The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are, the angels.”
“Some seeds fell by the wayside, and the fowls devoured them up.”
The fowls were under the control of the devil. The devil sowed the tares. Do not forget that he is transformed into an angel of light. It is true, as the Lord Jesus declared in John 8:44, Satan was a murderer from the beginning and a liar, and the father of it; but God warns us not to be ignorant of the devices of this supernatural creature who transforms himself into an angel of light. Thus in his camouflage, Satan is the most religious creature in the universe of God. Note how his servants propagate his religious messages as servants of Christ:
“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” II Corinthians 11:13 to 15.
Note how Satan himself quoted the Scriptures when tempting the Lord Jesus. Luke 4:1 to 13. Satan, as the god of this age, blinds the minds of unbelievers so that they will not believe the gospel and be saved.
But in Ephesians members of the Body of Christ are seated in the heavenlies. Note in Ephesians 3:10 why they are to obey Ephesians 3:9:
“To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in the heavenlies might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God.” Ephesians 3:10.
“And to make all men see what is the dispensation of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, Who created all things by Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 3:9.
So we learn that believers are not wrestling against flesh and blood when they seek to know and propagate the wonderful message concerning the Body of Christ, “the dispensation of the mystery”. It seems that they are fighting humanity for they are opposed on every hand by religious Christians who themselves make no effort to obey Ephesians 3:9, but rather oppose, and sometimes with ungracious and foul tactics, those obedient servants of the Lord who try faithfully to make others see what is “the dispensation of the mystery”, “to the intent that now unto principalities and powers in the heavenlies might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God.” Ephesians 3:10.
But the conflict is against the ruler of world darkness and spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies. Although the devil lost the high place he had in the heavenlies he still has much to do with principalities and powers in the heavenlies. Surely we know that the clever devil is in control of most of the religious movements on this earth, as well as the political rulers of this earth.
But in this message we emphasize the particular sphere of Satan’s activities with respect to the position and possessions of members of the Body of Christ in the heavenlies. The devil, in Paul’s day, was determined that the mystery should not be proclaimed and explained. He used his religious servants to get Paul locked up in jail. Note Paul’s testimony in II Timothy 2:8 and 9: “Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead, according to my gospel: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evildoer, even unto bonds; but the Word of God is not bound.
“The Word of God is not bound”. But note in connection with the spiritual panoply required to withstand the adversary:
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication of all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” Ephesians 6:18 to 20.
The devil is just as determined today that there shall be no obedience to Ephesians 3:9 to 11:
“And to make all men see what is the dispensation of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, Who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in the heavenlies might be known by the Church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
He is more than successful so far as most of the members of Christ’s Body are concerned. But let every member join with Paul in the prayer of Ephesians 6:19 and 20—Colossians 4:3 and 4—Ephesians 1:16 to 18—Ephesians 3:15 to 18. This wisdom of God was ordained to our glory before the world began. I Corinthians 2:6 to 8.
Now carefully note the spiritual armour, the whole armour of God, required to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:11 to 20.
And again note carefully in Ephesians 6:19 and 20, the Divine method, the believer’s prayer for getting out the “mystery of the gospel”. Satan used his religious servants to get Paul in jail for that message.

IN THE HEAVENLIES PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS

Note carefully:
Ephesians 1:19 to 23
“And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power. Which He wrought in Christ when He raised Hint from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenlies, Far above all principality and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the Head over all things to the Church, Which is His Body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all.”

Ephesians 2:6
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus”

Ephesians 3:9 and 10.
“And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, Who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in the heavenlies might be known by the Church the manifold wisdom of God.”

Ephesians 4:10
“He that descended is the Same also that ascended up far above all heavens that He might fill all things.”

Ephesians 6:12
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies.”

What about these principalities and powers in the heavenlies? Note Colossians 1:16 and Colossians 2:13 and 15:
“For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him and for Him.”
“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses.” “And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Colossians 2:13 and 15.
Now note why God wants all members of the Body of Christ to see the dispensation of the mystery:
“To the intent that now unto principalities and powers in the heavenlies might be known by the Church the manifold wisdom of God.” Ephesians 3:10.
Now note that the devil does not want members of the Body of Christ to see.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies.” Ephesians 6:12.
Is God having His way with most of these members? Or is Satan? And how many of such members are praying, the prayers of Ephesians 6:19 and 20—Colossians 4:3 and 4—Ephesians 1:16 and 17—Ephesians 3:16 to 19? Why not begin this very moment? Then you will look back on this moment as one that brought more joy into your soul than any moment except the moment when you received Christ and knew you were saved from the wrath to come.
But because you have escaped the wrath of God do not think that you shall escape the wrath of men. Paul did not. Of course you may not have to go to jail, as our Bill of Rights gives us protection from religious persecutors. Paul did not have this under the Roman government. But if you faithfully obey Ephesians 3:9 and 10, you will also know what it is to be a partaker of the afflictions of the gospel, in accordance with II Timothy 1:7 and 8. And you may be sure that Satan will give you his special attention for he hates “the mystery” message with a vicious hatred.
But how blessed to know the truth of Colossians 2:10, “And ye are complete in Him Which is the Head of all principality and power.”
And Romans 8:31, “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us; who can be against us?”
Then note in Romans 8:38 that principalities and powers cannot separate us from our Saviour’s love.

SATAN KNOWS—CHRISTIANS SHOULD KNOW

Satan understands the meaning of Ephesians 3:10. He does not want the members of the Church to do anything about it, or even understand it. Every member of the Body of Christ should know the truth of Romans 8:38 and 39 and Colossians 2:13 and 15. The Lord Jesus has spoiled these principalities and powers and they can never separate the believer from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
But note again why God wants all believers to see “the dispensation of the mystery”:
“To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in the heavenlies might be known by the Church the manifold wisdom of God.” Ephesians 3:10.
Let us humbly confess that we have been negligent or disobedient, perhaps ignorant, concerning the Lord’s will in this matter; but by His grace we are going to see what God wants us to see and help others to see it.
Let us be faithful in praying for open doors and open mouths that this glorious message may be sounded forth. Let us resolve that Satan shall no longer keep us from seeing “the dispensation of the mystery,” from making known “the mystery of the gospel”, that members of the Body of Christ in every place shall know the hope of His calling and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and shall also walk worthy of the vocation wherewith members of Christ’s Body are called.

IN THE HEAVENLIES

The Holy Spirit wrote to the Hebrews, “knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance”.
Note carefully Hebrews 9:24—Colossians 1:5—Philippians 3:20—Ephesians 2:6—Ephesians 1:3—Philippians 3:20 and 21 and Colossians 3:1 to 4:
“For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.” Hebrews 9:24.
“For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the Word of Truth of the gospel” Colossians 1:5.
“For our citizenship is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Philippians 3:20.
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:6.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 1:3.
Note again Philippians 3:20 and 21:
“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it might be fashioned like unto His glorious Body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself.”

ON THINGS ABOVE.

“IF YE THEN BE RISEN WITH CHRIST, SEEK THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE ABOVE, WHERE CHRIST SITTETH ON THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD. SET YOUR AFFECTIONS ON THINGS ABOVE, NOT ON THINGS ON EARTH. FOR YE ARE DEAD, AND YOUR LIFE, IS HID WITH CHRIST IN GOD. WHEN CHRIST, WHO IS OUR LIFE, SHALL APPEAR. THEN SHALL YE ALSO APPEAR WITH HIM IN GLORY.” Colossians 3:1 to 4
Surely our calling is a holy and heavenly calling. Our blessed Saviour is far above principalities and powers. are seated in the heavenlies in Him. We are blessed with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies. We are to seek those things which are above, where Christ sits, for our hope, position: citizenship and blessings are in the heavenlies.

PUT ON—PUT OFF

In Ephesians 4:22 to 32 and in Colossians 3:7 to 25 the believer is instructed to “put off” many carnal practices and to “put on” the Spiritual. The believer has “put on’“ and is to continue to “put on” the New man who is created in righteousness and true holiness, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him.” Ephesians 4:21 and Colossians 3:10.
We learn in Ephesians 2:8 to 10 that the believer is not saved by good works but unto good works. Note carefully Ephesians 2:10 and some other verses in Ephesians:

Ephesians 2:10
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 4:1
“I therefore, (the prisoner of the Lord) beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.”

Ephesians 4:17
“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind.”

Ephesians 5:2
“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour.”

Ephesians 5:8
“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”

Ephesians 5:15
“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise.”

Surely believers, who are seated in the heavenlies, should walk as becometh saints whose citizenship is in heaven. Note some other verses as to the believer’s walk. Read Romans 6:4 and Romans 8:4; Galatians 5:16 and 25: Colossians 1:10, Colossians 2:6 and Colossians 4:5; I Thessalonians 2:12, I Thessalonians 4:1 and 4:12 and II Corinthians 5:7. We leave with you Colossians 1:10:
“That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

GOD’S ETERNAL PURPOSE - Pastor J. C. O’Hair

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

After reading the above Scriptures we might wonder what a man has to do with his salvation. These Scriptures tell of God’s eternal “grace” purpose. Man’s responsibility is set forth in other Scriptures.
We have God’s work and man’s part in salvation in II Thessalonians 2:13 and 14: “For we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. Whereunto He called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Here we learn that God chose, God called, God sanctified; man believed the truth; and by the gospel the believer obtained the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.
But in the Scriptures listed above for this lesson we see the sovereignty of God, or His eternal PURPOSE, in man’s redemption by grace.
Note II Timothy 1:9: “Who hath saved us and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own PURPOSE and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.”
Here we learn of God’s eternal “grace” PURPOSE; God’s grace and PURPOSE given in Christ Jesus before the world began. This is in harmony with I Corinthians 2:6 to 8 and Ephesians 1:4 and 5. The salvation and calling without any works on the part of man is in harmony with Ephesians 2:8 to 10 - Titus 3:5 to 8 and Romans 4:4 and 5.
And all of this is confirmed by Romans 8:28 to 30, where we read what God predestinated and that all things work together for the good of God’s elect.
Why do all things works together for good for those who are the called according to God’s PURPOSE (Romans 8:28)? Because God foreknew, predestinated, called, justified, and glorified. Who can be against God’s elect? (Romans 8:31 - 33 - 34).
We learn, in Ephesians 3:9 that God wants all His children to see the great truth called “the dispensation of the mystery,” “the mystery of His will” (Ephesians 1:9), “the mystery of Christ” (Colossians 4:3 and 4), “the mystery of the gospel” (Ephesians 6:19 and 20), which is according to His eternal PURPOSE, which He PURPOSED in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 3:11).
This is profound truth, wonderful, glorious truth. When did God PURPOSE His eternal PURPOSE in Christ Jesus? Before the world began, when He foreknew and predestinated the mystery of His will, that all things should work together for good to those who would be the called according to His PURPOSE.
Now note Ephesian 1:9 and 11: “Having made known unto us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He hath PURPOSED in Himself. In Whom also we have obtained an inheritance being predestinated according to the PURPOSE of Him Who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will.”
In I Corinthians 15:1 to 4 and Acts 3:19 to 25 and Acts 26:21 and 22, and Romans 11:27 to 29, we learn of some blessed events which are “according to the Scriptures,” foretold by the prophets. But truth, according to “God’s eternal PURPOSE” is different. It was not foretold by the prophets. Therefore it is called “the unsearchable riches of Christ.” (Ephesians 3:8).
Compare the “searchable” riches of Christ in Acts 17:11 with the “unsearchable” riches of Christ in Ephesians 3:8. In order that Christians might understand God’s eternal purpose God has instructed Christians to pray in Ephesians 1:16 to 18 and Ephesians 3:14 to 21. God’s instruction also is to test things that differ. Divine truth, according to the Scriptures, (in fulfillment of prophecy) is different from the truth of God in Ephesians, according to His eternal purpose.

THE CHRISTIAN’S SANCTIFICATION - Pastor J. C. O’Hair

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

In that wonderful prayer of the Lord Jesus Christ, He prayed for His disciples, “Father, sanctify them through Thy truth, Thy Word is truth.” (John 17:17).

This prayer was uttered before Christ went to the cross and offered Himself without spot unto God. (Hebrews 9:14).
What is the meaning of the truth in Hebrews 10:10 and 14: “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all?” “For by one offering He hath perfected forever them that are sanctified?”
Christ offered Himself once for all on the cross. Is it true that by that one offering He hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified? The Word of God says, “Yes.”
The Scriptures state this plainly. Then we must conclude that the believer, who meets God at Calvary, is sanctified once-for-all, because that “the worshippers once purged should have no more conscience of sins.” Hebrews 10:2.
This does not mean that the sanctified person (saint) will not be conscious of imperfections, or consider himself sinless, in word, thought or deed. (I John 1:8 to 10). But before God his defiled conscience is forever cleansed. Such is the efficacy, power and value of the precious shed blood of the eternal Son of God.
And Hebrews 10:26 does not say that if a person sins after he receives the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more forgiveness of sins. This is explained in Colossians 2:13 and I John 1:9 and 2:1. But Hebrews 10:26 says, “no more sacrifice for sins.”
“Jesus, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered without the gate.” (Hebrews 13:12).
“Elect” through sanctification of the Spirit unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ.” (I Peter 1:2).
The word sanctified, also translated “holy”, means separated by God unto God, for God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
Every one thus separated is a saint. Some saints do not behave as becometh saints, but no one becomes a saint by behaving, only by believing. (I Corinthians 1:1 and 2 and 3: and I Corinthians 6:19 and I Corinthians 6:5 to 7).
Saints are instructed to walk as becometh saints. (Ephesians 5:1 to 4). But they become saints by grace through faith. (Ephesians 2:8 to 10 - I Corinthians 6:11).
Now let us read and believe II Thessalonians 2:13 and I Corinthians 6:11: “But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through SANCTIFICATION of the Spirit and belief of the truth.” “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are SANCTIFIED, but ye are justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”
Salvation is the result of believing the truth and God’s work of sanctification of the believer by the Holy Spirit.
No one is saved who is not first sanctified. In I Corinthians 6:11 note the order, washed, SANCTIFIED, justified.
The believer is saved without works; but unto good works, in which he should walk because he is saved. (Ephesians 2:8 to 10).
In such Scriptures as II Corinthians 7:1, as the “twelfth chapter of Romans and the third. chapter of Colossians and others, saints are exhorted to a holy walk and conversation. But remember that believing sinners are saved by faith in the crucified and resurrected Christ. Now read, Hebrews 13:12; “Wherefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered without the gate.” He suffered to bring sinners to God. (I Peter 3:18). After the believer is sanctified once-for-all (Hebrews 10:10 to 14) he is called to a life of separation and service.
